Volvo Unveils New EX90 7-Seater SUV, Electric Replacement for XC90

The new, fully electric Volvo EX90: the start of a new era for Volvo Cars

Originally Posted by Volvo Cars Media
A true seven-seater, all-electric SUV that further raises our standards in safety and a more sustainable lifestyle: the new Volvo EX90 represents the start of a new era for our company in which we set a decisive course for a fully electric future.

Starting with the Volvo EX90, we’ll reveal one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, we aim to sell only fully electric cars, one of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry and crucial to our ambition to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.

We revealed our new fully electric flagship SUV to the world in downtown Stockholm today, reflecting our Swedish roots. At the same time, reflecting our global footprint as a company, the Volvo EX90 is planned to be built in the USA starting next year and later also in China. By then, we aim for those two production facilities to be climate-neutral.

A new instant classic in Scandinavian design, the Volvo EX90 defines the principle of form following function. It’s a versatile, stylish family car with modern proportions, combined with cutting-edge technology in core computing, connectivity and electrification to optimize safety, efficiency and aesthetics.

“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” said Jim Rowan, our chief executive. “It’s fully electric with a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices. The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”

Keeping you and your loved ones safe
The standard safety in the Volvo EX90 is also higher than any Volvo car before it. It’s designed to understand you and its surroundings to help keep you, your loved ones and others in traffic safe. It can also get smarter and safer over time, as it learns from new data and receives updates.

The Volvo EX90 has an invisible shield of safety enabled by our latest sensing technology, inside and outside. State-of-the art sensors like cameras, radars and lidar are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers, where NVIDIA DRIVE runs Volvo Cars’ in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world.

Our sensors don’t get tired or distracted. They are designed to respond and react when you’re just a fraction too late. Our lidar, delivered by Luminar, can sense the road in front of you, whether it’s day or night, also at highway speeds. It can see small objects hundreds of metres ahead, creating more time to inform, act and avoid. The sensors also contribute to improve the reliability and overall performance of our assisted driving function Pilot Assist, with a new steering support while changing lanes.

Inside, our invisible shield of safety also looks out for you. Special sensors and cameras, powered by our own in-house developed algorithms, gauge eye gaze concentration. The technology allows the Volvo EX90 to understand when you’re distracted, drowsy or otherwise inattentive, beyond what has been possible in a Volvo car to date.

It’ll alert you, first softly nudging, then more insistent. And if the unthinkable happens, and you fall asleep or are taken ill while driving, the Volvo EX90 is designed to safely stop and call for help.

Finally, thanks to the state-of-the-art sensor set including lidar, the Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo that’s hardware-ready for unsupervised driving in the future.

Technology with a purpose
A core system – powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms Xavier and Orin, Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies, and in-house developed software by Volvo engineers – runs most of the core functions inside the car, from safety and infotainment to battery management. The end result is a more responsive and enjoyable experience inside the car.

In other words, your Volvo EX90 won’t be just a new car, it will be a highly advanced computer on wheels. Even better, just like your smartphone or your laptop, the Volvo EX90 is designed to get better over time, thanks to regular over-the-air software updates.

By combining the state-of-the-art computing power from Snapdragon’ Cockpit Platforms with the visualization capabilities of Unreal Engine, the 3D tool developed by Epic Games and used to power some of the world’s largest games, to give you lightning-fast computing power and high-quality graphics on the in-car screens and head-up display.

A 14.5-inch center screen is your gateway to one of the best infotainment systems on offer, with Google built-in. Google apps and services including hands-free help from Google Assistant, Google Maps navigation and more of your favorite apps on Google Play all come built-in. The displays in the Volvo EX90 help you keep your eyes on the road by offering you the right information at the right time. The Volvo EX90 will also be compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay.

Thanks to the standard 5G connection where available, it’s never been easier to install the apps you need on your home screen and enjoy highly intuitive navigation. You can also stream your favorite music through the new, reference-quality Bowers & Wilkins audio system featuring Dolby Atmos as a Volvo-first, plus headrest-integrated speakers for immersive sound.

The Volvo EX90 will also come with phone key technology as standard. Your smartphone serves as your car key and automatically unlocks the car and starts a personal welcoming sequence as you approach. Your personal profile will also be loaded automatically as you enter the car.

All of this technology comes together in one of the most pleasant and elegant car interiors on the market, full of natural and responsibly-sourced materials. That interior composition also reflects our sustainability ambitions, such as being a fully circular and climate-neutral company by 2040.

Supporting a more sustainable lifestyle
With its brand new, in-house developed fully electric technology base, the Volvo EX90 is your perfect companion for a more sustainable family lifestyle. Expected to deliver up to 300 miles of tailpipe emission-free driving range on a single charge, it charges from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.

The initially available twin-motor all-wheel drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 370 kW (496 hp) and 671 lb. ft. of torque. In combination with the brand new chassis, this creates a great and smooth driving experience.

The Volvo EX90 contains approximately 15 percent of recycled steel, 25 percent of recycled aluminum as well as over 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, which corresponds to around 15 percent of the total plastic used in the car – the highest level of any Volvo car to date.

Finally, the Volvo EX90 is our first car with all the necessary hardware to enable bi-directional charging. It’s a technology whereby you can use your car battery as an extra energy supply, for example to power your home, other electric devices or another electric Volvo car. We plan to make bi-directional charging available in the future, starting with selected markets.

Volvo EX90 in the United States
The 2024 Volvo EX90 is now available for pre-order in the United States at volvocars.com/us. The 7-seater Volvo EX90 will be available well-equipped at under $80,000. Customers placing pre-orders will be asked to configure their cars in Fall 2023 and will receive prioritization when deliveries begin in early 2024. All Americas-bound Volvo EX90 models are expected to be built at our plant in Charleston (Ridgeville), South Carolina.

Looks boring. Looks like some Mach-E styling cues as well,

Also, another absurdly priced new car that the average American cannot remotely close to afford

Do they say anything about why they aren't going with the Polestar brand anymore? I thought it was their EV sub-brand?

It looks exactly like the Polstar and costs about the same, same specs, they just slapped a Volvo logo on it instead.

Volvo is trying to make Polestar a more "upscale" brand to compete with Porsche, essentially one level higher than Volvo.

Volvo is saying this will come in well-equipped at under $80,000. The Polestar 3 is a size class smaller than the EX90, doesn't feature a third row, and starts at $85,000.

It is a luxury vehicle. Never was intended to be for an average American. Just like iX isn't for average American. You want average, wait for something like Honda Prologue which will be built on GM Ultium platform.

Nice addition to 7-seat EV availability, not many of them. Starts under $80k, so a lot more affordable than a Model X.

BIG emphasis on safe. massive. 3 hallmarks in the video were: Safety, Sustainability, Technology.

I feel like Safety is a baseline goal, not a hallmark. Different strokes... it's why I've never seriously shopped a Volvo - no soul, but I would bet that I've benefited from Volvo's comittment to safety and it's impact on the market.

Freaking tablets.on.everything. Can design engineers actually do their job anymore and not just cut and paste?

I surely hope this all goes sideways the way digital dashes from the 80's did but my gut tells me it here to stay. People are different now and seal clapping for the mundane while the bean counters cream their shorts over the cost savings and still charge a premium. A small ray of hope with VW going back to some physical buttons but I have my doubts. Damn you Elon for unleashing the "just stick a tablet in it" plague upon us.

Every EV looks the same. That front badge being slanted would also drive me nuts.

Looks great to me! For those saying it looks boring...what do you expect for a 7 seat SUV? This is a vehicle designed for safe family duty, not tearing up the race track or being flashy around town.

The fact that you could slap any brand's logo on the steering wheel and never notice the difference because the interior of every single one of these cars looks exactly the same. There's no imagination. What will differentiate a Volvo from a Kia, Ford, Hyundai, etc interior?

you know, to start how about some passion in the design instead of a square box with two screens and a steering wheel inside and they want 80K?

Why even bring in track in ev suv discussion? Next time when you are on the road count how many exciting vehicles do you see that are not black, white or silver.

I wish my Hellcat was not black LOL, but it looks good...until I pull it out of the garage!

Wish this was already out. Wife just signed for a gas XC90 today. I’m positive she would’ve taken this instead in a heartbeat.

I watched the live stream today of the unveiling. Good to see another EV 7 seater joining the fold. The only concern is the range of "up to 300 miles." It will be interesting to see where they land on that and how efficient the vehicle is. Anyhow, this will go into the consideration set when our current lease is up in 2024 along with the Rivian R1S.

Is Volvo known for their cutting edge interior designs? I mean, I get what you are saying that virtually every EV has adopted the large center tablet format. But it wasn't too long ago that every ICE car had the same iPad type screen bolted onto the dash.

And to be fair to Volvo, they've had this tablet design since the 2016 XC90, not exactly new for Volvo. While the design isn't revolutionary or original it fits Volvo's design theme and looks nice.

The exterior is decent, but I find the outgoing XC90 and Volvo design language has a more expensive and elegant look to it. Something about this EX90 is too plain, especially the side. Maybe other colors and trims will show this off better.
