N55 lean codes
Having an issue with my 2013 N55. I'll give a bit of background.
I started having slight jerks during idle and driving. A single jerk or stutter here and there. Took car into bmw and had them change plugs. Car was still having issues but no codes yet. Then i finally got a code stating misfire on Cyl 3. Changed all the coils and still having issues. Swapped the plugs and coils and still having misfires on Cyl3 and Cyl6. Next course of action, changed out all the fuel injectors. i should mention that i originally had EU5 injectors on the car and i was told that since i'm changing ALL 6 injectors, that EU6 would work fine. And i should also mention that BEFORE the injectors were changed, i got misfire and lean codes. I also had the MAF replaced. The injectors were pressure tested and it all passed and not leaking. The HPFP was tested and is holding pressure properly. So all misfires are now gone but still stuck with Mixture control. 118001 -Mixture control: mixture too lean 11CF30 -Mixture control: Multiple fault BMW diagnosed and pressure tested the system and found a minor leak on the valve cover so i had it replaced. They started the car and within minutes, lean code again. Tech is going to do a full reprogram on the car software to see if that solves it which i really doubt but worth a try. Trying to get input from people to see what direction i can go now. Thoughts? |

Do you get the lean code at idle / cruising ? If so it's almost certainly vacuum leak or air is being ducked somewhere pos maf.

I don't have any misfire codes. But I have that slight jerking here and there at idle and when I let off the brake from a stop. So interested In What exactly fixed that issue. Was that due to the injectors? Or coils? I already replaced my plugs. And did a transmission fluid change.

Interestingly enough, the lean codes come on as soon as the car gets started. I had the vacuum hose replaced as the clips broke. The system was pressure tested but they may be doing it again.

Good to know. I didn't want to keep throwing money at it. I'm all for preventative maintenance. But a lot of the items on these vehicles is crazy expensive. Even if you are doing the work yourself. I think injectors are around $6-700. But I'll take a shot at it. And let you know the outcome. It's crazy. Because I see a lot of threads about the transmission jerk. And if it's linked to injectors...well it just doesn't make sense.

I do have slight jerks in park and idle. Sort of like a random misfire. But no misfire codes. Dealer price is crazy. That's like $3500 for 6 injectors. So ~$500 is a steal.

Maybe some one can comment or confirm this for me...
Can EU5 injectors get replaced with EU6 injectors? And i mean the entire set of 6. Im getting a lot of mixed information. I called BMW and the parts guy confirmed that i CAN use all six new ones. But i was browsing and found this... "Yup, you nailed it. My last post was based off a quick explanation I got from the SA over the phone.. I didnt really understand what was going on at the time. When I picked the car up, my SA explained it with more detail.. basically i had EU6 injectors installed, and the ECU was looking for EU5 which was throwing the lean code. Actual write up on the invoice: 66218 INCORRECT INJECTORS (INTERNAL WARRANTY LABOR PER *tech name redacted* INCORRECT FUEL INJECTORS INSTALLED AT LAUDERDALE BMW, LAUDERDALE SENT THE CORRECT PARTS, WE INSTALLED) CONNECTED BATTERY CHARGER AND PERFORMED VEHICLE TEST, FOUND FUEL MIXTURE FAULTS STORED, CHECKED HISTORY AND FOUND FUEL INJECTORS RECENTLY REPLACED AT A DIFFERENT DEALER. CHECKED AND FOUND EU6 INSTALLED, ENGINE CONTROL REQUIRES EU5 INJECTORS. REPLACED ALL 8 FUEL INJECTORS SUPPLIED BY LAUDERDALE BMW, CALIBRATED INJECTORS, RESET ADAPTATIONS AND CLEARED FAULT CODES." |

i should comment that the lean codes i was getting BEFORE i replaced any injectors but i was misfiring. But i could have got the codes because i had a defective injector and now i'm having codes because the versions? so much to consider.

FCPEuro shows both eu5 and eu6 for for my 2011. But I read that I should be using eu5 but can't remember why. I'll look into it. I only remember it was eu5 because they were more expensive

Just FYI. I don't trust eBay. As there is too much counterfeit. I purchased ngk spark plugs which turned out to be fakes. I just so happened to catch it before installing it. Read that the tips of fake spark plugs can break off and cause serious damage. After that. I said never again. So for my Bmws. I only order from fcpeuro and if need be they're only a 45 min ride from me.

All new turbocharged BMW engines use a direct fuel injection system which directly injects fuel into the combustion chamber. This differs from a port injection system which injects fuel into the intake side of the engine through the intake manifold. Direct injection fuel systems operate at significantly higher pressure than a conventional port injection fuel system. Due to the design, the engine really relies heavily on a properly operating fuel system. If your BMW is suffering from misfires or has a rough idle it can be due to faulty fuel injectors.
Also replace decoupling element 13537577649 when installing new fuel injector. Note: Per BMW service bulletin SI B13 03 15 the injectors in the vehicle may not match with what is listed in the BMW ETK. Identify the injector installed in the vehicle using ISTAD 4.04 or later test plan using the following path: Vehicle management - Service Functions - Powertrain - Engine Electronics - Injector Determination Test plan will state, "this engine required EU# injectors". This fuel injector is for vehicles with an EU5 designation and will not work on a vehicle with a different designation. On N55 powered vehicles this injector is used on vehicles equipped with a Bosch high pressure pump. |

Thanks for the info. Will have BMW double check and verify. I'd be pretty annoyed if they didnt know about this incompatibility ahead of time. They advised me that it wouldnt matter as long as I replaced all of them at once. To clarify, the parts department did. The tech's installed it for me so youd assume they would have verified this...I'll find out tomorrow what's going on.

Hey guys...so I'm back to square 1 AGAIN.... so the issue was, I had a slight hesitation or jerk randomly while idling or driving at a steady rpm.. so I went through the entire process as mentioned in prior posts... well, after coils, plugs and new injectors, I'm still getting the jerks and hesitation.
Today I decided to "lug" the car going up a slight hill in M mode 7th gear and upon load, the car started jerking and I got misfire cyl3 and injection shutoff codes along with multiple injectors shutoff. What else can it be? Ideas? |

This was a while ago... but yes.. it was an injector issue.. bad injectors. To further complicate the issue, turns out, the car was programmed with the EU5 injectors so when I got the EU6 injectors, they fit fine but wouldn't work correctly, hence still having 'injector' issues. Replaced with EU5 injectors and problems were gone. Double check what version injector that's installed first.

badass335. Just read through your whole scenario start to finish. Legitimate thank you for updating through the end/the fix (it's a rarity on these forums!).
With that said and your final comment - is there a quick way for me to check the injector type I have without contacting BMW? Possibly through Bimmerlink or Bimmercode maybe? Thanks |
