I just bought the starter relay, going to try it first. I am thinking maybe the starter relay contacts are sticking a little bit and not disengaging as going as it should.

On the parts list on your invoice, did they also mention replacing the starter relay?
Checked both invoices (2014 & 2017) for the dealership/warranty repairs, and no mention of the relay; just the motor itself was replaced (twice)...

Good luck.

Update: Replacing the starter motor relay did not solve the problem. Solenoid still sticks during cold start up. Next step would be to replace the starter solenoid. I am hoping I don't have to replace the whole starter since it is difficult to get it out of there.

Let's see if I can just unbolt the solenoid from the starter motor and replace it with a new one.

I just checked my invoices for the starter repairs; the first one in 2014 was covered under warranty, and regarding the second one in 2017 (outside of warranty), I was able to get the dealer to do a 50% "goodwill repair" with BMW North America covering the balance owed.

Three starter motors in six years with only 53K miles; C'mon Man!?!

The dealership obviously agreed, and thus offered the discount...

In 2017, I paid $505 total (again, 50% off) for parts & labor. For reference, ECS Tuning is currently selling the OEM starter for $616. If I had to do it again today, I'd have the job done at a local independent shop.

Hope this helps.

So, not sure how handy you are with working on the car, but My recommendation is to buy a low mileage started off of an LCI car (or car with start stop F01/F06/F10/F12/F13 all will work) and replace yours with it. It will be identical in fitment but the motor is much beefier and meant for 400k start/stop cycles. I replaced it myself in the garage with car on jack stands. Just have to ensure you unplug the battery and also there is little room so some jostling around will be needed to get the angle just right to pull it out. Putting the new one in was not a big deal at all. Also, you will literally HEAR the difference. Sounds much nicer/quieter now and have not had the same issue.

Is the battery new? I have a 550ix 2011, there were no problems with the starter... although when I assembled the engine, I installed a new one, as well as a generator, so as not to have to climb into the car again
