Neither did I. For a while I had an Atari 2600. It broke around the same time my mom married my then step-dad. He was a computer programmer and stingy as Hell. He wouldn't allow me to replace the Atari with a then-new Nintendo. As a 9 year old, all I could do was ask and plead my case. Christmas, Birthday, let me earn money doing chores. Nope, nothing. So I has to settle for crappy "games" like Flight Simulator on an orange monochrome screen.

I was never a true gamer - but my mother used to drop me off at the arcade in the mall while she shopped. I was young enough I had to get step stool to play, so pretty young, and my game was Centipede. I'd get the high score almost every week. She said there would be people behind me watching sometimes when she came back. Once she came back and I was still on my first quarter and she had to wait. LOL

As I got older I fell away from gaming though. We had a 2600 and all that, but petered out way before the playstation Xbox type days. A 8 month old could smoke me.

My sister could play Asteroids till she flipped the score back to zero without losing, so I'd lose interest waiting and go do something else. That killed gaming for me.

And then I found cars.................

If im not mistaken, these were ran via laser discs. Yeah, never found one that was like $1.00 to play....only played a handful of times and defaulted to my normal lineup. I think I have a working version on one of my mame cabinets...but havent fired them up in a few years. You knwo how it goes, once a project is done...move onto the next; for me @least.

I do believe you are correct about the laser discs. I guess your kids dont have much interest in our "old" games do they?

Back a few moons ago, I used to delivery furniture. We would stage the night before, show up at work and head out for the day....before cell phones were common. So I had the entire Michigan area as my arcade playground. Always knew where there was a local arcade and had a roll of quarters on stand by. As long as we got all the customers taken care of...the owners didnt care much if we were gone all day. Anytime a new Mortal Kombat was released, I took the day off. Got to a point to where I could beat the hardest level on 1 credit. And then waited for a willing soul to play me 1vs1. 1st round i'd keep it close and then release the fury of Scorpion/Sub Zero/Kabal/Lu Cain.

We used to goto this arcade called Wizards Den in Detroit...not real common for white folks to go there, but I was cool with the owner and most people that were regulars there. Was playing NBA Jam and did the Tank Code...almost turned into a fight. As at half time, the game reverted back to the old school Tank game and the NBA Jam game was then finished. The other 2 guys were kinda pissed and started to get a bit loud. This is where knowing the regulars came in as a benefit...problem no more. I did pay for there next full game as I wasnt aware it would end the second part of the game on them.

Arcades were a huge part of my younger life and kinda sucks there is not too many still out there for my son sake. But nice to see his GREAT interest in games. Watching him play like Nitro MX with crossed over hands...#Elite

Cassettes...what about some Linda Ronstadt vinyl (grew up listening to via moms music selection) or Styx 8-track (my early 80's listening)?

I'm going to go a different route. Anyone remember text based games such as Zork? I'd post a picture but a picture of a screen of text is pretty boring.

I got one for you, Tommy. I like your taste in games. 720 was a great game, and so was Crystal Castles. You have Marble Madness?

I don't have any but always wanted to start collecting. Keep spending my money on women, though.

And I loved Zork. I had to use the Invisiclues book to finish it, though. I also played II and III to a lesser extent. Zork Zero was dumb as fuck.

I played the hell out of this one:

And Tron Deadly Discs in the full cabinet was cool, mainly due to speaker placement.

Man, this is a hard one. I mean can we break it down to a specific genre? Or at least console V arcade? If I were to break it down, for console that is, we'd have to start with which console I keep going back to. Turbografx-16. The game, Ninja Spirit. The controls are tight, the sprites are awesome for the era, and it's just a joy to smash through levels being an OP ninja- providing you collect adequate power-ups to suit your build.

As far as arcade? Holy hell, that's asking a lot. However it's a hell of a lot easier to answer (providing we include pins in "video"). Capcom's Big Bang Bar pinball. Bar none (no pun intended), hands down. I was working at a Capcom arcade in the Midwest sometime in the 90's. When we got that piece (Big Bang Bar) and I tried it out, I was constantly "testing" it during my tenure there. The ramps were great, the mini-games amazing, and the entire aesthetic- I think they knocked it out of the park. Unfortunately come to find out years later when I attempted to track one down to buy it, it was never released. My location was a test market unbeknownst to me. I flew back to the Midwest to see if I can purchase the pin from my old employer only to find out a vendor we worked with had already done so.

That's my white whale. I know another company, I believe loosely related to said vendor, got the rights to the machine and had produced 1500 limited edition units. I wouldn't even mind one of those. They just never pop up for sale.
