Ultimate drive event 2010
So I drove the new 2011 535i vs MB E350 last night at my local Ultimate drive event. The 'event' itself was not quite what I expected it to be - I attended some 'events' in the past (original X3 launch and MB SKL launch) where they allowed you to drive the cars around the 'course' and all. This one was more like a bunch of teenagers giving out the keys, but whatever I guess, at least I was able the two driving back to back.
The E class impressed with really nice interior and that is pretty much it. I mean its a nice ride comparing to a Caddilac or a Towncar I guess, but it in no way can be compared to the new 535i - loose steering, little torque, plushy ride, idiotic I-Drive controls. I was seriously impressed by the new 5 though - as large car as it is (and I am currently driving e39 530i which isn't a small car) the driving dynamics is great. Amazing amount of torque with the automatic box and even better brakes, I mean this car felt faster that both MT 335i and 135i I drove before... Although I am not considering getting another 5 at the moment this would be a blast daily driver... And by the way - never got that 'special offer'... |

I drove the 550 w/ the automatic (even w/ "manual" shifting) and it didn't feel very fast. I was pretty tired when I did the event, so I didn't even bother driving the E350. I saw the interior and was surprised it had that MB cheapness to it, and that the BMW interior was better. Of course, being a 550i there were probably some interior options on it.
Honestly the best part about the event was probably the free food. And by "special offer" did you mean the $1000 off any BMW (for the most part)? That may have been an invite-only thing.

I was invited but I guess it takes a few days as everything is done via email. |

You'll get the 1000 bucks (I hope); give it a few days. Too bad it can't be used on the new 5.
And yes, speed is relative... if I had a 6MT in the car I'd have a different opinion. I guess I didn't feel very alive using the automatic, or if they offered a DCT instead. But that's most likely for the M5.

I didn't see that kind of restriction. It says that the offer is available on "all model year 2011 vehicles with the exception of the all-new 5 Series Sedan." Just make sure you ask your CA, although I can't see why he/she would reject you. You must purchase a car before September 30th though.
