I read the article regarding car produced before 1/3/11. My car was registered in 31/3/11 so in all likelihood produced before the cut off date. When I spoke to the indy garages they were telling me this issue is far more prevalent on older cars but they had done a number of f10/11 cars up to late 2012. Really all I can suggest is getting a reputable independent to give your car the once over and if its ok keep Bmw approved oil changes regularly. You'll know yourself if the car dosent sound right I noticed the change when idling straightaway. My wife thought I was going mad and just told me to turn the stereo up |

jabroni80,
What I was saying was to change the oil more regularly than the service schedule and use different oil. The CBS may require an oil change up to every 19,000. I would half that. A main dealer may use the cheapest LL04 oil it can, I would use Castrol Edge LL04. It's quite possible that the first owner may have done horrible things to your car, which will never be known. |

My 2012 520d had the guides and chain replaced at circa 35k miles.
Started in much the same way as jabroni80 has experienced - very faint ticking noise from the engine bay. Took it into my local dealer who confirmed that there was an 'issue' with the guides and replaced them along with the chain. Thankfully it was still under warranty so no nasty bills to cover, however it was in the dealership for the best part of a week. On the plus side they did give me a fully loaded F30 320d M-Sport whilst mine was being torn apart

Hi folks, one small detail, BMW dropped Castrol as their oil supplier early 2015, and are now using Shell both for new cars and servicing.

I used to make lubricating oil base stocks for one of the major oil companies.
I wouldn't get hung up on Castrol, Shell or Mobil spend far more money on lubricant technology than Castrol ever has. I may well be wrong, but, I don't believe BMW ever actually used Castrol, it was just a marketing deal. I think Fuchs was initial fill in the factory and every BMW dealer I have used was using Shell for servicing. Mobil 1 would be my choice and is what I have always used. Ian |

My 2010 F10 520D started with a clatter yesterday morning so I took it to my local BMW specialist and it transpires that the tensioner had broken and the chain is very loose and stretched.
I now have to fork out £1500-£1700 for the repair as BMW say my model is not affected by the fault. And my used car warranty won't pay out as they say it's not a mechanical failure (how they conclude to this I have no idea) Sad times. |

There was never an actual recal, they called if a quality enhancement and it only applied to a select handful of cars fitted with the N47. The official document released can be found on page 3 of this e90 post.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...1108243&page=3 As far as I know they are no longer doing the enhancement work. |

My car F10 520D is July 2011 build with N47D20O1 engine and the timing chain is currently making horrible noise both BMW dealer technician and indy have said the noise is due to the dreaded timing chain. Based on the information above, I had always believed timing chain problem would not affect my car as it was produced after March 2011.
To make matter worse as I mentioned in my earlier thread I am waiting for my G30 order. This incident is making me lose faith in BMW and I am not sure whether I should not cancel my G30 order. Especially as the dealer now seems to be back tracking on the guarantee value for my F10. The indy says it is going to cost £1200.00 and BMW says about £2000.00 and would not be able to ask for BMW goodwill contribution until they have stripped the engine and officially diagnose the fault So which way should I go for repair? Indy or BMW dealer? Should I cancel my G30 order as I tend to hold to my cars for long periods |

cancel the G30, and wait for values on the F10/11 to fall to a more realistic level. Most new cars are not value for money and certainly not a new BMW 5 series. |

I've just hit the same problem - a timing chain breaking???? Have to say this is the second BMW I have owned (previous was a 330 Club Sport which the gear box failed on) - Going to get the work done, sell it and never touch BMW again.
