2014 528i - 18 MPG Fuel Economy

Hello internet people!

Trying to figure out what's the best way to go about the fuel economy on 2014 528
I do mostly city driving - 90% of the time, accelerate carefully and economically, my previous car was a Prius, and obviously I am not expecting Prius MPG, however, people are getting mid 20's MPG (http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/528i/2014)

I am out of warranty with BMW, but I still have warranty at the dealer whom I got the vehicle from.

Also, the engine vibrates when idle after I start the car after it has been sitting for 6+ hours. (see vid)
it stops vibrating like that after 15 min of driving.

Thanks for all your help in advance!
Andrew

What is your average MPH? That will help give some perspective as to the MPG average you've already given us.

City/urban driving can vary depending on size of the town and street layout. If your daily driving is on city/urban streets that have you driving on long boulevards/parkways with timed lights & down hill in both directions ...your average MPH could be higher than someone driving the same 90% city/urban but has to stop every 3 blocks and multiple idle periods during those stops...five stop signs...and up hill in both directions ...again their 90% city/urban driving can see really low average MPH...which would coincide with a lower average MPG.

The average MPH will give a better perspective of you engine load (starts/stops/etc)...so always remember to reveal that along with your average MPG.

18 MPG heavy city driving is about right even for an N20 motor.

if your car has +50K miles the likely culprit are your engine mounts are bad.

Doesn't sound weird, my 535xi will only get 18 on florida city roads aka wide open 55mph cruising with a few lights.

Small gutless engine pushing a heavy sedan around, its's doing the best it can with the cards its been dealt. It has to work very hard where a larger engine generating considerable torque can move the same car with minimal load winding up with similar fuel consumption. The N20 has absolutely no business in a F10, yet BMW put them in there.... I'll second the engine mounts, N20's are incredibly unrefined buzzbombs of engines and they tear up engine mounts abnormally fast. How unrefined the engine is becomes extra abundantly clear once the hydraulic fluid ruptures from the body of the mount allowing the mount to collapse.

538xi has bigger engine and all wheel drive, right?
So consumption is higher, correct?

Mounts are ~$135 each, you'll need two

labor depends on if you DIY or take it to a shop, would suggest a BMW independent specialist over the corner gas station

Getting 18.3 mpg in 100% city driving with my “poor buzz Bomb” N20. Gotta love the haters. LOL!

Had the vibrations at 38K mileage. Was a motor mount. Fixed under warranty. All good now.

My lead-foot wife gets a shade over 17 in her N55. Actually, pretty impressive considering the action of coasting isn't in her repertoire!

I have been driving mine pretty hard (datalogging for a custom tune) and get ~24.5 mpg just about every fill up. I track my mileage using Fuelly...

How are you determining your MPG?
Your memory, the car, at the pump?
Also as Qsilver asked, your average MPH plays into this.
As for the vibration, motor mounts.
Have it checked since you are covered.
