Moon Roof Squeaking and Rattling
I have started to notice recently that my moon roof is constantly squeaking and rattling as I go over bumps and around hard turns. I will take this in, but is this something that can be easily remedied? Would this require replacing the whole moon roof?

My 2013 did this the first week i took ownership of it.
open the sunroof half way and get out of the car. From the outside looking down right at the front part of the sunroof there is a a plastic trim there with about 6 hex shaped bolts there. Either tighten or loosen those alittle and it solved my rattle. Sometimes loosening it releases the tension causing the squeak / rattle. Worked for me and another member so its worth a shot. Alan

My extremely and annoyingly squeaky sunroof has been driving me nuts lately.
The squeaking has been going on for 2-3 weeks, and I've had the sunroof tilted up since then to avoid listening to the darn thing. Now we had some rain so I finally had to do something. Googled for some help other than trying different kinds of silicone sprays etc. which I doubted would help in this case. Alan's tip from 10 years ago was spot on! Took me 2 minutes to do and the squeaking is now gone! What a wonderfully easy fix!! Thank you very much, Sir! Quote:

Timely. Last winter my sunroof started to squeak/rattle for the first time and I mentally put it on the summer list to replace the outer seal. E39s were notorious for this, I think I did it twice DIY while I owned that car and a dealer did it once just before the warranty expired. Wind noise was also gradually increasing but it went unnoticed until the seal was replaced and the difference was apparent.
I still haven't managed to get to this since last winter and next winter is fast approaching. I'll take a look for those bolts and give it a try, though I may not know if it was successful until it's too cold to want to do the seal replacement. hmmm.. Anyone done the outer seal replacement before? EDIT: Did you find them noticeably loose? I notice the original tip says "loosen or tighten". Last edited by Surly73; 08-22-2023 at 06:24 AM.. |
