VIN Security

I know VINs encode things like manufacturer, model info, safety systems, options etc. But does it encode anything personal that could be abused? Is there any danger in freely sharing your VIN on the internet? I mean it's printed in the dash but my SSN was also printed on my YMCA scuba c-card in 1991.

the VIN is specific to the car at the time of manufacturing, there isn't any personal information attached to it.
