How to tell if RTTI is active ?
Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2013 530D with the NBT headunit. I have purchased the "Connected Package Plus " from BMW which includes USB update to satnav maps and Real Time Traffic info. I'm in the UK and realise that the 3G network (Vodafone) is being turned off next year BUT as the BMW portal allowed me to purchase I assume that, until then, RTTI will still work. I have updated the maps and that works fine. However, I am not sure if the RTTI is on or not ? How can I tell if traffic info is coming from RTTI or TMC ? Thanks in advance for any help. |

In the US, even though 3G is still turned on and we can send addresses to the car and other remote services, RTTI has been disabled by BMW. If, in the UK, RTTI is still activated for your BMW and you've turned it on in the Navi (not sure I'm recalling that bit right), you can tell it's working by the maps on the screen. On main roads covered by RTTI, you will see Green, Yellow, or Red lines adjacent to the road indicating the level of traffic. Another way to verify it (or not) is to set a destination that routes you on a congested segment. The estimated time of arrival will show a +XX for the amount in the estimated time of arrival that is is due to traffic. Lastly, you will not be rerouted due to congestion during a trip. That wonderful feature has been decimated by 3G being turned off and BMW not providing a solution. They'll tell you they are sorry but they will not provide a solution. They aren't sorry. Not even a little bit.

Thank you for the answer. Much appreciated. I've just come back into the office after being out in the car. I set a local route and noticed in the info panel on the bottom right it says "TMC" so I presume RTTI isn't active. I guess I need to phone BMW for a refund.

Just for info: I phoned BMW Connected Drive support - They had me go to the car, enter the Connected Drive screen from the main menu, press Option and then select to do an update. RTTI is now working perfectly !

Interesting. In the US, the subscription to connected services is something paid annually. I was not allowed to do that so no RTTI.

Call the BMW customer service line and complain about losing the service and that you use it regularly. They will turn it on for you (gratis) until the end of January.

I don't quite understand the differences between BMW UK and BMW NA but it might be helpful to see what your MyBMW profile for connected services actually says.
This is what I see for a MY2014 F07:
