BMW Connected App Problem

My 2016 535d is currently at the dealer as it attempts to deal with a problem involving the functions of the BMW Connected app (i.e. vehicle locator, horn, lights, ventilation etc.). After discovering no error codes, the dealer contacted various technical offices within BMW USA seeking assistance to the problem. Anyway, one of these offices advised that this problem was about three-weeks old and is currently without a solution. That offices claims there are several thousand service tickets on the issue and a resolution has yet to be found.

Being a skeptic, I like to verify that BMW USA's claim (of a massive problem with no solution) is genuine or possibly just a way to blow off my dealer (and, in turn, the customer).

In short, is any F10 owners having problems accessing their respective car via the BMW Connected app and activating the vehicle;s various features? I would think that this would be easy enough to verify.

As an aside, I also own a 2016 X3 with the same BMW Connect features. Oddly enough that vehicle functions perfectly with the same app on the same phone. Therefore, I am inclined to think it is not a problem with my phone and all 2016 BMWs with the feature.

Any feedback for the readers of this forum would be helpful. So thanks in advance.

You're really not going to get a representative sample size on a forum of this size. You'd pretty much need a nation wide poll. BMW USA very likely does have tickets open for this, but knowing how large corporations handle technical tickets, it's probably pretty low priority.

As for a representative sampling, I didn't imagine a response. However, between this forum and another, I don't see a huge groundswell of owners with this problem. In fact, I might be the only one. If that's the case, I am not inclined to buy into BMW's story on this one. Moreover, I find it odd that the system works and suddenly it does not. And moreover, it's a mystery without a an answer. I know that it affects my 2016 5 series and not my X3 of the same year. I also have determined that the problem exists with android and iphones. Also, only some features driven by the car's 3g sim card are affected. For example, the office and weather features continue to function. Also, if the problem is the result of some change in the Connected App program, the change would have to be made in both the android and Apples versions. Also, why would a change to the Connected App software affect only some models of the 5 series?

If you're correct about this having a low priority at BMW, I sort of feel cheated. In essence, I've bought something that no longer works and BMW doesn't care.

Just checked this morning on my way to church. ConnectedDrive (BMW Online) worked just fine. I was able to check gas station prices; which is all I checked.

The forums comprise of maybe a couple thousand distinct owners. Just taking 2015 alone, BMW sold around 40k 5 series. Let's do the math:

Assume BMW has 5000 tickets open. That's ~12.5%.
Assume 5000 distinct forum members. Also ~12.5%.

So the chances of you finding someone who has both a ticket open and is on the forums is ~1.5625%. Meaning, of just the people who bought a 2016 F10, you'll find around 625 forum members with the issue. Given how active people are on the forums, this pretty much means you won't find one.

I believe Office is operated through bluetooth, meaning it might still work even if Connected doesn't.

Not necessarily. iOS development is in Swift/Objective-C, Android is in Java/Kotlin. A bug can exist independently in Android and not in iOS, meaning a change to fix an Android bug won't be reflected in the iOS program.

As to why it might only affect certain models: spaghetti code, spaghetti code everywhere.

Welcome to the real world. 550i owners had to start a class action lawsuit (and win it) to make BMW do something about their fucked up V8's.

My app hasn't worked since May of 2019. I have had a ticket in since Aug 2019. I have tried every combination of solutions I've found online and nothing works.

This issue is not specific to any particular year or model.

*****UPDATE*****
Today I saw a post online that actually corrected the issue for me! I pulled the three fuses for cell phone according to the fuse diagram. Logged out of the app. Deleted the app. Waited 15 minutes and put the fuses back in. Rebooted iDrive. Performed the BMW assist update. Turned off the car and locked it. Waited 30 minutes then reinstalled the app. All remote features are now working!!!!

I had done everything but pull the fuses at least 10 times with no luck. Seems pulling the fuses resets the vehicles cell data transmission.

Thank you to TheWizardofOdds who posted the solution in a review of the app in the Apple App Store! You are my fucking hero TheWizardofOdds!

Do you subscribe to the ConnectedDrive service? You need at least the $50 ConnectedDrive subscription.

You pulled fuses 23 and 27 in the glove box, and 117 in the truck area correct?

Time to resurrect this thread (I did search)...

Apparently the ConnectedDrive app is no more and is being replaced by the My BMW app. I stupidly deleted the CD app and installed the new one. I suspect the new one is for G+ chassis cars and just plain sucks, at least for me, in my 2014.

Anyone else with an F car have this issue?

I'm in a 2016 F10 and it's pretty bad, some features don't work and those that do are extremely slow.

Mine hasn't worked for so long I just gave up on it. It's sort of ironic that while I think the iDrive is years ahead of what Mercedes had offered in the past 5 years (not sure about current generation), MB blows BMW out of the water with their mobile app experience. While I absolutely hate my wife's GLC infotainment (nothing is strong enough to described how crappy it is), their mobile app works flawlessly and instantly to start/stop the car, lock/unlock, track (etc) every single time.

Anyway you look at it, the BMW app will self-destruct for us in Feb 2022 when 3G is dead.

I have written to BMW several times over this and all they do is apologize and say there is nothing more they can do about it. How hard can it be to update us to 4G? If it was reasonable, I would gladly pay, but to do or Ofer nothing is unacceptable.

In anticipation I've already downloaded the Genesis app. A good friend bought a G70. It's a VERY nice car and could very well be the replacement for our 2012 535i! I just may be jumping ship! There aren't many 540's available anyway.
