My 535i M Sport LCI

Hi there. I thought I should introduce my ride.

I ordered it in March last year and took delivery in June. After driving diesels for many years (company cars), when I changed jobs, I decide to buy my own and go back to petrol. My previous 5 series were an E60 525d M Sport LCI in Titanium silver and an F10 530d SE in Deep sea blue.

I selected a pretty comprehensive list of options;

MEDITERRANBLAU METALLIC (C10)

Upholstery EXC.LED.NA./ELFEN.W. EX.NAHT(SW/SW) (LZET) - Ivory white

XE7 IND.INTERIEUR T.PIANO FINISH, BLACK

2ND M L.-A.W. DOUBLE SPOKE 351 M/16",MT

2PA LOCKING WHEEL BOLTS

2TB SPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

2VA ADAPTIVE DRIVE

2VB TYRE PRESSURE INDICATOR

230 EU SPECIFIC ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT

248 STEERING WHEEL HEATING

258 RUNFLAT TYRES

3AC TRAILER TOW HITCH

3DZ WITHOUT ADDITIONAL DESIGNATION OUTS

575 ADDITIONAL 12V POWER SOCKET

6AC INTELLIGENT EMERGENCY CALL

6AE TELESERVICES

6AK CONNECTEDDRIVE SERVICES

6AM REAL TIME TRAFFIC INFORMATION

6NS ENHANCED TELEPHONY WITH EXTENDED SM

6WA INSTRUMENT CLUSTER W. EXTENDED CONT

609 NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL

610 HEAD UP DISPLAY

654 DAB TUNER

688 HARMAN/KARDON SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM

698 AREA-CODE 2

710 M LEATHER STEERING WHEEL

715 M AERODYNAMICS PACKAGE

754 M REAR SPOILER

760 INDIVIDUAL HIGH-GLOSS SATIN CHROME

761 INDIVIDUAL SUN PROTECTION GLAZING

775 INDIVIDUAL ROOF-LINING ANTHRACITE

Whilst my car was being built, my dealer gave me a 318d M Sport to use, which was slow and noisy, but looked nice!

Anyway, here are some pictures;

The 318d M Sport - looks nice, but painfully slow - and noisy!

My old 530d SE at the 'Ring; SE looks, but with adaptive drive, sports seats, black external trim etc

and in the sun;

And my E60, heading to France...I loved that car! needed more power, but great looks!

On track at Prenois-Dijon;

Good to see a 535i model being chosen in the UK.

I note you have gone for Adaptive Drive again, guess like me, you rate it highly.

Enjoy the new car.

Pete Hi, I remember you from BMWLand...

It was partly down to you that I went for the 535i rather than another diesel.

Too right. It looks like BMW only sold 98 F10 535i MSports last year. They managed circa 9000 of the 520D.

Thanks to the OP for keeping the second-hand market stocked up with such engines

And part of me wishes I had gone for the 550i !!!

Slightly worried that there won't be a G30 550i in the UK...

If you had bought a 550 Msport instead you would have been responsible for 20% of UK sales in 2015.

On those numbers it seems hard to believe they will keep the engine in the G30.

So if I want more power the next one might have to be an M5, or an M550d?

how do you feel going back to petrol now? Pro's and cons?

I would assume its more refined (and quieter).

wow so only 5 550i's sold in the UK. that explains why I've never seen one.

Here goes;

2015 535i 306hp, 400Nm, 5.7 0-62

2013 530d 258hp, 560Nm, 6.0 0-62

So, for the 535i...

Pros

Much quieter, especially at idle. Having driven diesels for so long, I had forgotten how quiet a petrol is at idle. Now when I drive my wife's 330d I really notice the engine noise.

Sounds much nicer when being driven hard

Faster

You don't have to wear a glove when filling up!

Cons

Less torque requires a recalibration of expectations e.g. less instant performance when pulling away from rest but then it starts to fly when you dial in some revs

More frequent visits to the petrol station. The cost doesn't bother me, but if I was doing more miles I might get fed up with filling up so often. For the driving I do, I average 23.6mpg.

I can't really think of too many more.

The 535i seems to handle better and what I mean by that is its less prone to understeer. They both had AD so that's level. The 535i is an LCI and has wider tyres. I don't know the engine weights but have wondered if this might account for the difference.

I am thinking about adding the M Performance power kit to take power up to 326hp and 450Nm. The extra torque might help reduce one of the cons...

Yes I saw that.

The current 550i is however 449hp and going by the current German prices £4k cheaper than the M550d. It's also a bit faster as well.

It would be interesting to see how "diesel like" the M550d is and how the X drive stacks up...

I back to back tested a 530d & 535i. I thought the 530d was pretty refined, (was driving my 330d at the time), but from start up the 535i was in another league. Wasn't simply quieter, it was the NVH refinement, memories of my E39 V8.

Didn't really have plans at the time to have the 535i, was really looking at a 530d/535d. Circumstances changed and mileage dropped, the 535i was top of my list. No regrets, don't really miss a diesel at all.

I've never seen other 535i saloons or tourings in the metal, only the demo saloon I tried and my own touring.

Yes a very good point, no vibration through the footrest or steering wheel adds to the overall feeling of calm!

A feeling of calm, is a good way to describe it.

I have a vivid test drive memory of pulling up at the Inveralmond roundabout, going back into Perth, thinking the engine had stalled. Nothing from the footrest or steering. What I notice immediately when in a diesel these days, (however good we may feel the refinement is) is the engine induced vibration coming back through to the driver.

Err, no. Just checked and I haven't! Will have to rectify that when I get a moment...

What I can say is that the Nappa leather is a lot softer than the Dakota that I used to have. To get it, I had to specify the Comfort Seats...

My 535D post detailing last year. Really chuffed with the nappa leather and the comfort seats.
The mocha brown is not to everyones taste, however I really love it, last minute change from the usual black, saw some pics on american forums and loved the colour combo, was a last minute change on the order and so glad I did it!

Also the comfort seats arent much more cost wise compared to adding the full electric option to the sport seats but you get the electric headrests on top!

I like the Mocha and am interested to hear how the Nappa wears, that was one of my concerns as I do 30,000 miles a year. The cream beige Dakota leather in my E60 still looked good after 135,000 miles, but I do look after it. I debated the comfort seats for quite a while, but they do reduce the rear legroom slightly (my 14 yr old is already 6') and they felt a bit flat after years of sports seats. I would probably got for them next time though.

The headrests adjust electrically on the sports seats if you have full electric/memory seats.

Thanks, I had assumed it was a comfort seat only party trick!
It does have lumbar support included, otherwise it was still optional extra on the sports seats with/without full leccys.
It was my man math on overdrive during the speccing process!

Wear wise, i have done 9000 miles since october, fresh as a daisy still. I got it fully detailed and they dye blocked it on top of the 3M coating, no obvious colour stains yet.
its quite a different feel to dakota leather, having had standard dakota on the 320d, its night and day apart and IMHO nappa should be what leather should feel like on a 5 series as standard.

I'm sure the protection will have helped, be interesting to know how it is in a year or two. Agree that's it gives a higher quality look and feel.

I went for the comfort pack, so got memory seats, lumbar and comfort access but decided to stick with the sports seats. The comfort seats are excellent value as an upgrade, they only added £150 to the cost when I bought mine.

It's all too easy to justify adding things when you're in the speccing process!
