535d EGR Cooler Recall
Are there any diesel owners who have changed out their vehicle's EGR Cooler as a result of a recent BMW recall? I thought it might be connected to vehicle fires reported in BMW diesels, but my local service writer says that's another issue entirely.
I only found out about this one while getting my car's oil changed as part of the warranty service every 10K miles. However, I would think a recall involving potential fires would be sent by mail (so perhaps my service writer is correct). |

I brought my 535d in for service 3 weeks ago - they told me about the recall and said they can perform some test and if it fails, they'll replace the unit. If it passes, they will re-program it (not sure what programming can be done).
Mine passed the test so it didn't need replacement. I'm constantly worrying about emission equipment failing on me but I do mostly long highway drives so I think that's the best thing for them. Have you had any problems with your diesel?? |

No problems with either of my diesels (the 535d or the X3), but like you, I do a lot of highway driving. My dealer said nothing of a test, but when I eventually picked up the car, I was told that the BMW had not yet supplied the cooler, so I would have to return. Moreover, they indicated that both the 4 and 6 cylinder diesels would require the installation of a new EGR cooler. Does your 535d currently have an EGR cooler as, frankly, I've never heard of the part until last Wednesday?

I'm not mechanically savvy enough to identify if I have an EGR Cooler or not but I searched on realoem and found this part number (11717823210) to be an exhaust cooler. Looks like that's the part they're looking to replace. I should ask my dealer what the test consisted of...

You encouraged me to research this cooler thing further. It seems that our cars came with an EGR cooler that should be located near the intake side of the engine. At times it cools exhaust gases before they enter the intake side of the engine. For some reason, I imagine this cooler to be located further down the exhaust system near the sections that burn off soot or inject DEF into the exhaust gases (to reduce the NO2 coming out of the tail pipe). There are a few video on YouTube (where else) demonstrating the cooler in action. Presumably, the recall involves something in or around the cooler or the entire cooler. Moreover, it must involve something common to both the 4 and 6 cylinder BMW diesels.

I visited BMWSF with my F25/28d couple weeks ago - SA had no idea what I am talking about. Quote:
E70/35d: 70K miles, 90% highway - no emissions issues just yet ( knock on wood ). Mostly highway driving, t-stat slowly dying ( highway temps readings are 81-83C ) |

I'm happy to hear other diesel owners having good experience with their cars. I'm the first of my friends/family to have a modern diesel and it's been spectacular so far. I commute from SJ to Santa Cruz and get 34 mpg consistently. |

I received a letter today for F31 diesel from BMW. It stated that there is no remedy yet so it sounds like for the N47, we still have to wait. |

Greetings
Here's a link to SaferCar.gov Recall Documents for 18V755. https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/c...55&docType=RCL The site contains not only detailed information from BMW on the recall but also contains a full set of instructions on the remedy...including color photos of the process. My 2014 535d is at the dealer now awaiting their analysis. I have continued to loose coolant over the last six months and there are NO signs of a leak. Hopefully the dealer and BMW will do the right thing and conform with the entire recall process. More to follow once I have a response from the dealer. |

I recall reading somewhere that leaking antifreeze in the EGR cooler is the reason for engine fires. Apparently, it will ignite under certain conditions when mixed with hot exhaust gases and the attendant heat will cause the plastic intake manifold to light up. I am not trying to frighten anyone, but it would seem that the dealer might be concerned in your case.

1.buy a spare egr cooler and keep it in the boot 2. find a mechanic who knows how to fit them. 3. Drive your diesel and wait for the ominous 'drivetrain error ' message which will happen eventually as a precursor to the car stalling fully/catching fire depending on how lucky you are.
4.Get your burst egr cooler replaced repeat.... |

Appreciate all the feedback. The dealer has placed my in a new X3 and I intend on driving it until my 535d is repaired properly.
I did find two BMW dealers within a 100 mile radius who have used 535d's (CPO) listed and who indicated in writing the Alert was complied with within the last 3 months. Not sure if they replaced the egr coolers or inspected only. More to follow... |

On the other hand the cars out there which are under private ownership get an 'inspection' and are told 'its fine'. Trouble is that if it then fails few months later and car is out of warranty its now not BMW's problem but your problem! when my car broke down 1.I spoke to service adviser no joy quoted £££ 2. I then spoke to BMW customer service and raised a concern(not a complaint) 3.Spoke to the Head of operations in the dealership(who was a lady and bloody fierce looking but I looked her in the eye and addressed her by her first name that got her on my side by explaining my plight and my concern that I had raised and that I wouldn't dare complain as I value their dealerships reputation) She then went in and toasted the service adviser and the mechanics and a few hrs later the car was ready! I will get my cars serviced at that dealership only as they have earned it. Also bottle of 16 yr old single malt and flowers delivered to the lady boss |

The local dealership finally complied with the recall and now 4000 miles later the engine light came on and the dealership says it's an 'EGR problem'. They want over $600 to run a diagnostics 'smoke' test to determine the cause of the issue. Not happy at all and would like to know if anyone has had a similar problem after having the recall completed. Thanks!

I had my 535D checked and they found the EGR cooler was contaminated. After the recall repair, the 535D is no longer that responsive when pressing the gas pedal. The acceleration is not as good as before. The fun to drive a BMW is lost.
