2013 528i n20 engine upgrade mods.

Been reading up for n20 engines for quite sometime. And all i could find is. Please explain it to me more if i put something wrong here.

Bootmod3. Stage 1 and 2. But my question is what are the requirements for starge 1 and 2? Do i need to change all the pipes and intercooler? Charge pip, etc?

Downpipes
Racechips? (Is it really that worth it?)
GFB bov.
Afe power momentum.

What else? Am i missing something?

Thanks

There is not a heavy selection of parts for the 528i N20.

Honestly, you can snag a nice custom tune or use a JB4 To help get a little power out and wake up the car.

I wouldn’t mess with spending so much on the AFE Intake, just toss in a BMS Air Filter.

Of course you can always throw on a Catless ER Comp Downpipe and add in the Remus exhaust system to get that quad look like the 535i or M5 and help the car sound slightly better and breathe more.

I feel like I’ve looked around a lot and it’s just super limited for the most part. Just not a lot of support.

Thanks for the reply, yeah. I've also looked up there's much more upgrades for the n55 engine than the n20.

Tune is definitely my next step.. but which tune is better? Bootmod3, jb4 or race chip?

You do not need any additional mods for stage 1.

Stage 2 requires downpipe and intercooler

The intake is not a must for any stage

I used to have 528i 2012. I had Wagner intercooler, AFE intake, ER dp, Bootmod3.
Intake is waste of money. Bootmod3 is best mod a lot better than Jb4 which I had also.
I had Bootmod3 stage 2 and wow its amazing.

Yeah i heard that intake and gfb dv+ is just making the turbo noise louder.

Was it really that noticeable with the stage 2?

It's not recommended to run stage 2 without additional mods. Best case scenario, IAT rises, ECU decrease timing, you do not make any additional power. Worst case scenario you damage your engine and/or turbo

Stage 2 makes 2 PSI more than stage 1, that's about 30 whp

Own the same car here in Malaysia. I go for BM3 Stage 1 and China Intercooler. Due to crappy fuel here, I'm working with Halim from PTF to resolve an issue I have on boost pressure pre throttle being too high around 30 psi using stock Octane 91 Stage 1 map. So far the custom test map he created for me seems to bring that down to around 23 psi which is good. I can vouch for the support from BM3 is really responsive. Go for it. Note that changing all aluminium big intercooler have a side effect that during low speed or stop at traffic light, the intake air temperature might be higher than stock intercooler. I believe it's due to our hot climate here plus the heat in the engine bay absorb by the intercooler when stop or during low speed. Once I drive more than 80 km/h, then only the intake temp is lower than stock intercooler.

i thought bm3 stage 1 you dont need an intercooler tho? yeah same here in indonesia, fuel here also sucks tho. so after you changed the intercooler and you drive kinda slow temperatur will rise up? thats what im afraid too by changing the intercooler. so the car beg to drive faster ? 🤣🤣

Sorry for the late reply. I only do BM3 Stage 1. Reason I'm changing intercooler is I detected knock in the engine during logging and thought lower IAT will reduce knock. Looks like for normal city driving it doesn't help much. But once I go on highway, my IAT is quite low around 42 degree celcius with 33 degree celcius ambient temp. The knock detected didn't log any error in the ECU so looks like it's no biggie. Even when running stock tune, I also detected knock in BM3 datalog so it's not the tune problem. I think the RON 97 in Malaysia is pretty crappy. I have try 3 different petrol station (Shell, Petronas and Caltex) with no difference.

The car does pull faster during acceleration. I just recently added xHD transmission tune stage 3 and the gear shift is much faster and fully utilize the torque available for each gear. Whole car feel awaken and no more lag in gear changes. Even when I'm accelerating from 110 km/h cruise, I can feel the gearbox quickly shift to 5th gear and the pull is quite fast. BM3 Stage 1 + xHD Stage 3 really transform the whole car. Feel like driving a bigger cc car.
