Well, Im looking at purchasing a set just for winter.
My question is if I go with 17s or 18s, with 17s according to this chart it has to be 17x8. Will I need 17x8 or can I go differently? Have been looking at facebook market and craigslist the 17s I found are 17x7.5 with 40 offset. Wanting something around 17s or 18s square setup. Stock height F10 535i xdrive 2011.

I don't know the chart you're speaking of but yes the width and offset leave little to vary due to clearance issues. 18's will give you more clearance.

I most likely will go with 18s if I find a sale on fb market/cl/letgo. 17s have cheaper winter tires so smaller rims wont be a bother to me cause id sacrafice looks over grip in snow.

Burr make sure the 17's clear your caliper. roads suck right now coming into work. not sure how long you've been here but there's quite a few times they shut down the Maumee bridge that goes over to Perrysburg. I commute from Maumee to Oregon. thank god I don't drive my BMW during the winter...I use my truck

OEM 17s offset is ET30, and I wouldn't go higher than that.

I would not rely on that website for a few reasons.
The main one being is does not differentiate between RWD and AWD,
Which have large offset differences.
Go with remmib suggestion, he is one of the wheel and tire guru's around here.

Use 17's on my '16 535d xdrive and the correct offset is important due to tight clearance between the front caliper and inside of rim. If your goal is to manage deep snow, go with the narrowest wheel tire combination and you'll be amazed at how a 5 series sedan plows through deep snow. The combination is also much cheaper. I live in a lake-effect snow belt and my 535d easily handled over 2 feet of snow in my driveway. Where I live, looking cool in the winter is not an issue, since it doesn't much matter how 17's look on a car covered in road salt and dirt.

Well so far, my 275 35 19s and 245 40 19s handled amazingly in the 10" of snow we got. From a dead stop just using all season lexani tires. I may be fine for this winter, will look into them before next with studded.
