Staggered or squared?
Hi guys, I have a 2012 BMW 528i and want to replace the ugly stock rims. I found the rims I want but now I'm having some trouble in deciding whether to run staggered or squared. Please let me know what would be best, thank you!

Staggered will help handling in corners. Looks better also.

Staggered! Running fatties on the back! Only thing is you can't rotate tires

I don't have any evidence, but to me it also seems the staggered (factory offsets and widths) setup also seems more stable on the highway, seems more dialed in to straight ahead. Could just be the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. There could be something with the offsets / widths that aid in reducing tramlining. Haven't really investigated, but this is just compared to my square 18" factory setup with the miserable Conti SSR RFs.

It's a question about what's most important for you.
I see only one reason for staggered setups, looks. Deep concave rear wheels and fat tires. Square on the other hand is beneficial since you can rotate tires, you get better performance with a more balanced handling (staggered setups increase understeer). Lower weight of a square setup is also good for performance. 255 square is a good choice for F10! |

I did a square set up 255x35 because I wanted to be able to rotate my tires. A wider tire in the back will help with handling though. All depends on what you want don't think you can go wrong either way.

if you plan on driving like a Grandpa than I would suggest you buy a square setup. if you plan on driving your car like you stole her...than definitely go staggered

Staggered has two advantages: traction and looks. When I had the factory squared 18 setup I struggled with traction. Some meaty 275's solved that issue. She handles great now compared to the floaty boat it was originally.
I also really prefer the looks of a staggered setup. I also used spacers to get things flush. To each their own. |

On my X6 I had staggered and loved them, got good mileage on them as new set. My 535 has 19" square and seems to eat tires. Warranty on staggered is typically half the mileage. I am going to try to get a credit as the current is at 3/32 with a little over half the mileage. Hate to put that much into tires ever 30K. I don't know how the staggered wear without rotation on the 535 x drive?

Yeah... Nope! I get about 8k-10k miles out of rear tires in a staggered set up (maybe 12k for fronts). I want a square set up so I can rotate them. Tires are too damn expensive to be replacing every 8 or 9 months. I just used spacers to push them flush on my G37s.

I already have 23Kish miles on the stock staggered 19" Michelin's. I should get quite a few thousand more. You must be a driving fool!!

Yep. I like the fun pedal too much and think I drive a little like your wife. I also tend to wear the sides of the fronts out too.

I'm on 21's 295 fatties on the back and have more than 10k miles on them with still plenty of meat. What the hell kind of tires are you using?

Two weeks ago I put Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric AS 245/45-18 on the G37s (square set up) because they also had a 45k mile warranty and were only $680 out the door after rebates. They have been great in all of the rain we have been having lately. Put some Konig flow formed wheels on it last year and they have been pretty nice and lighter than the stock alloys (got em for ~$180/wheel negotiated with my local Discount Tire). Too bad I need to sell it now as it has been a pretty fun car much like a 335i but with much better brakes (love the Akebono BBK that are stock on that car). The 550i came with Pirelli P Zero tires. Have to see how long they last and what some aftermarket 19's in a square set up will cost... Thinking 245/40-19 or 255/40-19 all around on 8.5" or 9" wide wheels. Tint and Sway bars are next. |
