Oil Consumption Test (N63)
2013 with 69,500 miles. It needed a quart of oil after about 1000 miles after I topped it off.
So when I took it in for a scheduled oil change I told my SA about it. They let the car idle for 15 minutes did a visual inspection on the exhaust tailpipes for blue smoke, but there was no blue smoke. So they want me to bring it back after I put between 750 to 1000 miles on it. My question...is this the beginning stages of a possible engine replacement? |

same boat...
I took my '11 550i xdrive to a local dealer late last week. It warned of a drivetrain malfunction and put car in limp mode. It has done this before but always cleared itself. Not this time. Dealer said #8 plug oil fouled and causing misfire.
Short story: car has 98,613 miles Local dealer (Lithia Auto Group) gave me 4 options: 1)replace valve stem seals and valve covers with no carbon cleaning $4,495 2)same as #1 except the intake system carbon buildup is cleaned $7,877 3)replace with reman engine with BMW paying 40% and me 60% so right around $6k 4)sell them the car for $5500 Dealer says engines are about 6 months out...not sure which route to take. I'm also waiting for quotes from an ind local shop. One ind shop wouldn't even give me a quote! Didn't want to touch the car. Best advice? |

No guarantee #1 or #2 would be a permanent fix. If a new engine was immediately available I'd say #3 is the way to go so you could turn around and sell the car with a new warranted engine. If 6 months is too long I'd ask for $6500 now and bail out.

I took my 2011 550i 55K miles to the dealer in Feb 2019 for the auxiliary coolant pump recall and mentioned to them that I was burning oil. This was my first time at this dealership so they didn't know my history of oil consumption complaints. They said they needed to perform a oil consumption test and they said they would call me later that day to pick up the car when it was ready. Later that day SA called and said that lots of smoke coming out of exhaust and they were going to change the valve stem seals. They kept the car for about 2 weeks, I received a X3 loaner for the period of time. No cost to me and things seem okay so far. I have put 200-300 miles so far and haven't noticed oil consumption issues yet.

The car is completely different now with regards to power. It used to be a lot more sluggish. I also have had the dinan stage 2 tune on my vehicle since 2012. |

I just got my 2011 550i back today after the valve stem seal replacement. BMW covered all the cost with the exception of $1700 for injectors and plugs. The overall cost of all the work they did was around $14k, car feels amazing compared to what it was.
The tech replaced all sorts of seals, gaskets, bolts, hose clamps, valve cover, etc. About 4 weeks ago I had 1 & 3 injectors fail. Asked for a diagnostic, they started doing the work without giving me a quote or me agreeing to the work so they covered a lot of work for free. I got 2 service reports, 1 with 2 pages and 1 with 5 pages (not to mention the packet we signed that was for BMWNA). They completed the oil consumption test and sent the results to BMWNA and the approved the valve stem seal replacement. About 3 weeks and they gave me '19 335i GT as a loaner. Completely happy with the cost and status of my car now. My recommendation is get an Oil Consumption Test done immediately and open a case with BMWNA, fight like hell to get them to pony up.
