Ferrari Daytona - What am I missing?

Let me preface this by saying that I have been a car guy since birth and growing up, there was nothing as cool or captivating as a Ferrari. The curves, the sexy lines - they've always been so beautiful to me and although I would never buy one, I have always thought of them as having some of the most amazing designs in the industry. I also watch my fair share of cars shows (Chasing Classic Cars and alike) and it seems that one of the models I hear about the most often is the Ferrari Daytona. It is almost universally admired and coveted and fetching high prices at auction. They talk about this car being so beautiful and such a collectors item...

The only problem is, I think it's the most hideous car to ever wear the prancing horse!

I find this car to be utterly shapeless and completely forgettable. I fail to see how any effort was actually made in designing the vehicle other than "Ok, straight line from tip to tail with a sloped front... add a roof... eh - good enough - Voila!"

I guess the reason I'm starting this is to find out if I'm completely alone in this thinking because I really don't get it. How do you guys feel about the Daytona?

Love it (but I drive an M Coupe). It's everything that the 512TR wasn't. The simplicity is what made it great, and it's top speed was huge for the times.

I thought the 550 and 575 got close to returning Ferrari to the classic GT lines of the Daytona, but the 599 is sort of a confused mess, neither a GT or a sports car, just some weird attempt at being both.\

350 hp, 2650 pounds, with a V12. Nice.

Just curious, but how do you feel about the Miura?

I love the E36/8 and agree with you completely on the 599. I never warmed up to that either but I'll wait to see how time treats that one. The headlights and floating C-pillar just seem misplaced. I guess if I find the 599 to be overdesigned, the Daytona is on the opposite end of the spectrum - completely underdesigned.

So do you feel the same way about the Miura and E-Type? They're both relatively plain, especially when compared to what came next for each.

Can you tell me if you have fond memories of your childhood?

Personally not a big fan of modern Ferrari design. Although I like the daytona in spyder form not a huge fan of the coupe. Give me a 250 lusso or a 275 gtb or the 275 gto over any modern design and as far as the Miura, what else can you say other than perfection. Nothing has ever come close for me. I wonder if gandini is still designing cars. Miura and the countach what a genius!

I think it's fantastic. Simple, elegant great proportions that hadn't been seen much in its day.

You also must consider it in its own context, what else was being built at that time?

...and the Daytona is definitely the beauty queen of that group. I love the e-type, it is beautiful, but the Daytona is beautiful, muscular, and it looks fast just sittin there. The espada and the Montreal should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Daytona

Drive a 599 and you'll get it!
It feels like liquid silk. Effortless in its movements and the ability to drive it cross country at any time. Great quality and feel. Fantastic car!

I would take a Miura or E-type a hundred times over before thinking about the Daytona. They have sumptuous curves and sexy lines where the Ferrari is just a straight line the eventually slopes downward. I just don't see any design appeal there. If the badge said Pontiac, would this design still be considered beautiful? FWIW, I had a huge poster of the 25th anniversary Countach on my wall for more than a decade.

I'm speaking purely on looks. I'm sure the 599 drives great but if someone told you Rosie O'Donnel was a great fuck, would you lay pipe? The car does nothing for me.

The Daytona's looks don't inspire me anywhere near the Miura's, but it still is a bit captivating nonetheless. What kills the Daytona IMO are those gaudy blinkers and I don't like the headlight implementation in this design. I feel like the back edge of the pop-up headlights should be flush with the hood; that gap in there makes it resemble a proboscis monkey in a way. However, I find everything about its lines intoxicating from the front axle back.

IMHO of course.

Daytona is cool.

Miura is ok, but I don't like the fisheye headlights.

815/125S/166 Inter are cute, Testa Rossa, 250SWB/GTO (25 years or so ago I bought a book about the GT/GTO stuff by Jess G Pourret '250GT Competition')
330P4(great!), 1970 512S, 512BB(i) (Nart), never was a fan of the Testarossa, but 288GTO and the Evoluzione, excellent, F40(LM/Nart), exciting. I had a tour at the factory in Maranello back in 1992 with my class. Impressive.
The newer models, I prefer the 599(GTO/XX) , 458(imo THE most exciting 'super'car at the moment), and the California in person is alright. FF would be a fine DD.

I almost forgot the one(two) of Glickenhaus P4/5 based on the Enzo/430 Scuderia(two, raced @ 24H Nürburgring 2011)

I like the Daytona, with the exception of the gigantic sidemarkers.

There are a lot of Ferraris that I like, but there are also a lot I think are ugly. The Testarossa, Mondial and the 612 to name a few, I believe are awful looking. That, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on the planet that doesn't like the looks fo the 458. I respect that the performance figures are biblical, I agree with that. Its just that I don't like the front at all (even though I know the splitters are functional). I hate the Cleopatra headlights and the big catfish-like nose. The back is growing on me however, I used to not like it either. The side profile is gorgeous though.

The Glickenhaus P4/5 lives local to me and I've seen it several times in the flesh and it is quite an achievement in a time when one off cars are rarely commissioned and even more rarely displayed and driven. I'd love to know how many miles he's racked up on that thing because it has to be quite a few.

I am also having the same issues with the 458 as Sylon. It's growing on me little by little but the front end looks more Korean than Italian.
