I'm configuring my 520d and was wondering if I should upgrade from the standard 17" V-spoke 236. I'm not into modding so this would probably be the only time I would be getting rims for this car, so what would be the best size? 18" or 19"? I'm looking for a comfortable, judder-free drive on far-from-perfect roads.

Is it true that some rim designs may cause a whirring sound while driving, perhaps the wind causes it? I've heard it on a demo car once and it has low-profile large-diameter rims. Just wondering if my choice in rim design would also impact the drive itself. Does the rim size have anything to do with the engine power?

Anyone with the 19" 332? How does that look?

The car is designed on 17".
For your ride wishes, just stay on the standard.
There are very much complaints to be found on F10's equiped with larger than 18" wheels.

Whether my F10 is on the 20" 356 or the 19" M-sport (winter set) wheels, the ride is very smooth.
Then again, the local roads are well maintained.

Consider other variables as well. Non runflats still make a difference. I can tell because my M3 e92 on non-runflats feels much better then the F10 on runflats.
Plus, adaptive drive including EDC is an important factor.

IMO, the F10/F11 is too pretty to be carrying 17" rims.

My F10 (2012 520d) is on 18" style 328, which I'm very happy with (I also have VDC, but don't know whether that is entirely necessary for a good ride on these wheels). I live in a rural part of the UK (a small Island), with less than perfect roads too!

Does the larger rim size put more strain on the engine, resulting in higher emissions? Should that be a factor for the 520d? I was thinking of going up to 18".

Yes, my 18" wheels raised the emissions from 123g/km to 127 (on the 2012 F10 520d auto).

Luckily, the new spec car has lower emissions than previous F10s, but obviously you do degrade them a little with bigger wheels. I thought the slight difference (in somewhat theoretical "lab" figures) was worth doing, but it's sensible to consider these factors when configuring your car.

17 and 18 is way too small for the F10..

I'm on 20 with S001 flat tires...i don't find much diff with 18 on runflat for comfort wise. in fact is quieter to me

Beautiful looking wheels, but I'm on a small rural Island with a lot of unmade roads to contend with.

Even 18s look huge in potholes or steep ramps to ferries etc!

The OP was also worrying about road surfaces...

18 inch is fine as long its BMW original wheels, if the OP planning to get aftermarket wheels then 20 inch wheels FTW
