550i owners chime in please!
Hi All-
I am interested in a 550i. Just out of sheer curiosity, how do you all do on MPG. I do a lot of freeway commuting for work and am very interested if the advertised 25 Highway MPG is accurate. Also interested in hearing combined numbers. Thanks much!

I'm getting 18.5 mpg in mixed driving during my 32-mile round-trip commute, and I like to step on it. Not bad for a 4300 lb porker with a V8. My previous Z4M Coupe got similar mileage and it was 3200 lbs.

T111,
I like to get on my 2011 550i M Sport..... But when I cruise and enjoy the view here in Germany I get 25MPG plus. It's all about how you drive it.... But you couldn't be looking at a better vehicle or wanting to drive a more responsive driving machine. This is my first post I will post pics of mine so you can have a peek at what I'm working with. |

I am getting 18.5 mpg in mixed driving as well. My 328i is not much better than that.

In Germany too and agree with the 25 mpg, although if you sustain 140 mph on the autobahn, that figure significantly drops.

I get about 17-18 mpg with mixed driving. On the highway doing between 75-80mph, I get around 26-27 mpg. That for a 400 horsepower V-8! That would be unheard of 12 years ago. I'm not complaining one bit.

Why? Do you pay full msrp because it is a 550i?

Anyone concerned with MPG needs to go with the 535i or the 535d with higher MPG engines. But, for 2014, the 535i and the 550i both get 24 MPG due to the tweaked V8 engine in the 550i. Therefore, for 2014, the major difference between the 535i and the 550i is the V6 verses the V8 and the price ($8,800). The 2015 535i will get a tweaked V6 engine (rumor) that will up the MPG to 28 and provide 335hp (up from 300hp in the 2014). As far as MSRP, I’m not hearing of discounts on any 2014s besides the $1,000 event discount and the $750 BMW previous owner discount since they can only be ordered at this time and the 2013s are still on the lots. There is no reason for BMW to discount the 2014s at this time. |

I agree 100%!! And, with the new tweaked V8 in the 2014 550i at an average of 24 MPG (verses 20 MPG last year) per the spec sheets, MPG really drops down the list when comparing models. I should have my 550i around the end of August and if I get 30-31 mpg at 75-80mph I will ecstatic.

The day i bought my 2011 550i, is the day i stopped watching my MPG, started counting SPG (smilies per gallon) and it can be way above 27 - 28
Lets be honest, we didn't get this car for MPG, even though it decent enough!! |
