I'm so sorry to hear this - what a crazy experience!

The good news is that the car is under warranty and should be fully corrected. Honestly, as frustrating as I know this is now, there are worse things that could happen than getting what effectively amounts to a new engine with an extended warranty to go with it.

I do agree that it's a good idea to understand all your rights. Hopefully you won't need to play hardball in order to get a good outcome. If so, this should all be behind you before too long and you can get back to enjoying your car and knowing that you get an extra year of not having to worry about the engine.

This just doesn't make any sense. I am with many here that you should consult a lawyer. No way they should get away with selling you a piece of shit and then trying to up sell you.

Either way, sorry for your experience.

I appreciate all of the input. The remanufactured engine will be here Wednesday and after it is in they will check the transmission. I think I might have a body shop check the frame to make sure the tow company didn’t tweak the frame as well but I’m hoping everything is ok. I’ll update as things get done.

Thanks for the update. That trip to see the lawyer is starting to sound like even more of a good idea!

You guys will get a kick out of this... so BMW gave us a X5 loaner the day that the engine seized. That night someone is knocking at the door and wouldn’t stop so my wife answers the door and then yells up to me that our neighbors hit the loaner lol. I went outside and it looked like they just touched the rear bumper with theirs so I asked them to back up and there was a 2” wood screw sticking out of our bumper, apparently the neighbors used that as a license plate bolt. . $1,190 to get it fixed lol. I thought someone might get a laugh out of this.
Service texted today stating the engine didn’t come in and that they are trying to get an ETA but do not have one at this point. I have to go turn the loaner in and settle up on repairs tomorrow so I plan to push for them to buy the car back.

I spoke with my lawyer today, explained the situation and got his input. He said I should give it another week and see if I get the car back, if I’m not able to get the car back in a reasonable amount of time he can get involved if I want.
For the record, BMW has treated me pretty well other than not buying the car back to work another deal and the new M2 deal they proposed seemed to have some high numbers. On a positive note, BMW did get the 550 towed right away and did put me in a nice loaner. Time will tell how this goes but I am hopeful that the engine arrives tomorrow and we are enjoying our new to us 550 by next Friday

I'd run so far away from that 550i...my 2014 M5 had totaled more than $30,000 in warranty repairs before it even hit 25,000 miles. RUN.

My 2014 535d has cost me about $5,000 in maintenance and repair (aside from tires) in 110k miles.

Wow Utah, I’m starting to wish I could.

Well I went in to go over numbers on the M2 or a 3 series and the numbers were pretty far off from what I had calculated. It took me a few minutes to understand why... they were paying off the car loan and keeping the $7,600 from our trade in so they were running numbers with 0 down on the financing for the M2 and 3 series. When I asked about the $7,600, they said they couldn’t do anything about it and the best they could do was to clear out my loan. So I would have to eat the $7,600 on a car I had 48hrs lol.

If you have extended warranty then don't worry about it. Just think of it as more time for you to test out different cars in their lineup.

The good thing is you now have a new engine and get to take care of it properly.

I got my car back today with remanufactured engine and new injectors. I’m very happy to have her back and she seems to be running great. Transmission checked out ok. Let’s hope it stays out of the shop.

On a side note, the salesman that told me I could go get a Dinan tune and keep my warranty intact was wrong. Luckily the 550 blew the engine before I got the tune because I am now finding out through the service department that the tune could have nullified my warranty and I would have been out of pocket on my engine replacement. So I’m going to to keep my mods to exhaust, rubber, and possibly a limited slip differential as I was unaware the only the M cars got a lsd smh lol.

All in all I’m happy right now and impressed with how quickly service installed the new engine.

Great news and glad that the transmission was ok. It's a magnificent machine even without the tune. Enjoy your new car and new engine!

What was the verdict on what caused the old engine to seize?

Glad to hear everything worked out and you're finally getting to enjoy your 550i. Fear of having to deal with warranty claim and shortening the life of impacted parts have kept me as well from a Dinan tune. I have the Dinan exhaust and Dinan springs installed. The exhaust is AWESOME if you're looking for a "civilized" drone-free experience that screams on WOT. The springs are "meh" at best - very minor improvement in handling (if any). Not to mention, they develop squeaking noise over time. If you want to do it right from the get-go, get KW V3s. The stock struts on the F10 xDrive just suck and no spring will improve that. I'm just waiting patiently (or impatiently??) for KW to bring back the rebate offer they had a couple months back.
