Small panel/insert below light switch.

I notice in my car and in a lot of pics of other cars that there is a small panel/insert below light switch and above the driver's side storage compartment. Does anyone know what it is for and why not all cars have it. In the brochure it's black against a biege background.

I personally just use that little panel as extra storage, like a mini glove compartment.

LOL, yeah I found that little glove box about a month ago.....just keep my sunglasses and bits in there....

As the OP says, he's referring to the inset below the light switch and above the mini glove box.
It's where the driver assistance system buttons would be if you'd specified the options.
