Oil Pan gasket leak

According to the dealer, i have a small leak coming from the oil pan, so they suggested its the gasket needing to be replaced.

they want to charge me 2191.00 for this job....

Is it this difficult to make the gasket change?

Nice they provide a video so you can see, not only the issues, but how serious they may or may not be. It appears you have a seep, that's why the tech said a drip. While it isn't particularly difficult, the engine may need to be raised to gain clearance. It's a process that takes time.

That seepage is manageable and you can go ahead without changing it for now. If you do skip it for now, keep an eye on the oil level (might not even change that much) and go ahead get quotes from independent shops.

The thing with the oil pan gasket is it leaks/seeps when oil is sloshed to it. Since it sits higher, oil will only get to the rear leak (your oil gasket seep location) when you accelerate or park on an incline. Otherwise, it isn't leaking when parked and not seeping much when cruising. Should it be taken care of, yes. Does it leak/spew pressurized oil like the oil filter housing gasket, no.

Thank you so much for that detailed msg.

You're right i have not seen any stains in my driveway, that being set it might not need to be changed right away..

Just the pricing seemed super high.
ugh..

Brand is right about the oil pan gasket not being a priority item at this point. It's not that bad right now so it gives you time to shop around and budget accordingly for the repair.

Just as a heads up, what you'd want to do for this is oil pan gasket, new crush ring (if you opt to do an oil change at the same time.. as you should lol... the OE BMW filter comes with a new crush ring), new oil level sensor o-ring, and oil pan bolt set + 2 misc bolts that are also required outside of the bolt set. The cost of the parts themselves isn't bad. The issue is labor. The way it's done here is you brace the engine at the top and lower the subframe to give you clearance to drop the OP. remove OP, clean, change gaskets, and reassemble. Sounds easy but it's very time consuming. It took my BMW tech buddy just over 7 hrs to do mine. You will also require an alignment after the fact.

Recommendation- If you feel you are due for a replacement for one of, or both engine mounts, this is the PERFECT easiest time to do it.

and to add to the video, a leaky OFHG is exactly what gets oil on the belt which we've seen here eventually causes slippage > belt gets jammed between the engine and the crank pulley > gets sucked into the engine through the front main seal causing catastrophic damage.

I'd advise you put this at the top of your list.

Yeah. He did measure from the wear bar??? Who does that? My dealer does videos too. Here's mine:

I'll get to my op gasket guibo and bushing soon. If not in the next few weeks. Then early spring. As winter is coming and I don't have the space in the garage right now. But yeah. It's a job. It's rated at 10 hrs in the books. Took me a bit of time when I did it on an e53 X5. Had to disconnect all the suspension components and remove the front axles (awd) while supporting the engine from above. Then remove the front subframe/cradle to get the op out. I've seen quotes from 1600-1800. So you're quote is about inline considering inflation. Sucks because it's probably less than $100 in parts.

Wonder if it's a tactic so dealerships can try to sucker you into buying tires earlier than needed.

Went back to the dealer after years and they also did the a video. The price sounds outrageous. Mine was done for $950, non x drive. Move this car to a independent shop ASAP, that technician sounds like a IDIOT.
