Misfire after runnling low on gas.
Problem solved: It was injector #2. Also the engine oil was contaminated with fuel.
Hey everyone, my 2012 N20 528i (103k miles) misfired and had the following codes when it was run really low on gas: 140001 - Misfire, several cylinders: Fuel injection is switched off 140010 - Combustion misfires, several cylinders: detected 140201 - Misfire, cylinder 2: Fuel injection is switched off 140210 - Combustion misfire, cylinder 2: detected Having thoroughly chastised the person responsible I put in gas and got it to start but it idled very rough and got a large cloud of white smoke at initial start up. Cleared the codes and they have not returned when just idling. I have not driven it. Based on the above codes and that it was basically starved of gas I believe it's an injector issue and, therefore, I need a new cylinder 2 injector? Or is it possibly the coil, ECU or HP fuel pump? Recently the left turn signal flashes quickly but works and has this error code: 800F46 (Direction indicator, rear left, faulty). Is there a way to rule out an electrical fault? I have searched for this error on Bimmerfest and only found a F10 with the N55 with the same codes. Thanks for reading! Any help is appreciated. Last edited by Swordsman; 02-02-2024 at 08:14 AM.. At 104k miles, consider new ignition coils and spark plugs if they haven’t been replaced yet.
Try swapping the cylinder 2 coil with another cylinder and see if the problem follows. |

Try to eliminate symptoms by doing the most cost effective methods of problem solving first, simple and less expensive possible resolutions before digging deeper into considering to replace more expensive components. Try a fuel system cleaner, as mentioned in the comment above, Spark plugs and new Coil packs if not resolved.

Problem solved! (Injector 2)
Quote:
I wanted to post the resolution to this problem in case anyone else has the same issue: it was injector #2. I replaced the injector and spark plug, drained the gasoline-laden oil and a new filter. Problem solved so far after 1 month of driving. I'm not sure if running low on gas contributed to the problem or if it was just random. Thanks everyone for reading and replying! -Dan |
