BMW differential fluids
Hello, fellow DIY enthusiasts,
I was looking for a viable replacement for changing my differential oils for both my front and back diffs. I found a Redline product but upon searching online I am even more confused as to whether it is safe to do. the BMW ones on FCP euro are crazy expensive (56$ US per quart and I live in Canada). Anyone have experience with this. On the redline website, it says it is safe to use on G1 through G4 types which makes me want to pull the trigger and go for it. Vehicle: 2012 BMW 528i xdrive link for redline oil: https://www.redlineoil.com/75w85-gl-5-gear-oil thank you all for the help! |

Unfortunately NEWTIS isn't public any longer which makes it hard to follow. I attached static versions. |

Personally, knowing this is done every 60k miles, I opted for the BMW Hypoid Axle Oil G1/G2. Nothing against Redline products, but knowing how finicky these cars, didn't want to take a chance for a one-time expense.

My mechanic used LiquiMoly for my front and rear diffs. 12K miles later nothing has blown up and nothing is whining. Diffs are not terribly sensitive to oil brands as long as they meet the specs. I used redline in my 335d and it worked fine with a little MOS2. My X5M I used the factory oil on the rear diff as its a trick lsd.

Based on Liqui Moly's website, they don't have gear oil that meets BMW specs. I know they do make 75W85 gear oil but it is not G1/G2. Liqui Moly 75W85 may work but it just doesn't meet the requirements from BMW.
Front - 75W85 G2 - 83222295532 Rear - 75W85 G1 (GL-5) - 83222413511 Transfer Case - DTF1 - 83222409710 Transmission - ATF8 - 83222152426 |
