does middle backseat headrest come out?
i'm trying to get it out but it is not coming out. if it is made to be removed, any tips to help get one out that is not coming out easy? after trying some, then went to shaking and pulling hard but nothing.

yes, it was simple. the pin came out easier than expected. i took a tiny screwdriver, like one that clips into a pocket protector, and just slowly pulled it out, being careful not to scratch anything. came out smoothly. i can't wait to give it a drive this weekend and look in the rear view...

I too am looking forward to a much clearer view out of the rear window. However my drive will need to wait until I get my trans filter/fluid change completed - the timing of which will be dependent on my turkey intake. |

For those of you interested, here are a couple helpful pictures to guide you through the process.
Circled in green is the cap to remove; right side of the rear center headrest: The cap is held down to the headrest carrier with 3 small tabs (circled in green) and should pop off reasonably easily. Circled in red is the small clip that needs to be removed using a small screwdriver, plastic trim tool, etc. This is a better view of the carrier and clip with the headrest removed: The clip on the right side holds the headrest down by slotting into the groove on the post, circled in green. This picture is actually of the left side, which also has the same groove: The left side carrier, circled in red, has a push button to release the headrest. As mentioned, the left headrest post has a groove to engage with this push button (just like the other rear headrests) so you can now remove/install as needed and it will not fall out when you fold the seat down, etc. Since I will not have anyone sitting in the center of the back seat, I also took this opportunity to remove the lower seat bottom to remove the seat belt receptacle as well as the carrier for the belt. A t50 male Torx is needed for the bolts, circled in red. The center belt detaches from the lower carrier by pressing in on the small red square. I also did a little vacuuming. The lower rear seat is removed simply by pulling up at the front (on both sides) to release some friction clamps and then pulling outward slightly to clear the upper rear seat and then carefully out the side door. BMW provides a nice place for storing the center belt once it is detached from the lower carrier. Besides removing something from your line of sight in the rearview mirror, making this readily removable lets you pull all the rear headrests for cleaning the back glass, vacuuming, etc. Hopefully this helps someone along the way. |
