vibration 60-80mph

Hi all

I have a 520D LCI Auto which has had an annoying vibration at motorway speeds for the last 20k miles or so, car is currently at 72k

It's been in to BMW and its had balancing done, its had road force balancing and hunter laser balancing both at BMW and a third party garage

Last week (23rd march) it went back into the dealer and it had the rear propshaft replaced, - this didnt resolve the issue

car was taken by myself to a wheel specialist who found one of the alloys was buckled - this was repaired - had no effect on the vibration

it is a very fine vibration felt through the steering wheel, floorpan and the seats, the passenger seat actually visibly shakes whilst travelling at speed.

BMW tech today stated he couldnt feel what i was talking about and was getting quite arsey, i have no idea where to go from here

the car is otherwise great, is serviced on time (and gets an interim oil change every 10k miles) brakes etc are all good, i'm told suspension is fine, however i'm looking to get a second opinion on this.

could anyone help shed some light on this issue?

thanks

could be anything........but when I owned my honda accord, I had this exact issue, and it got even worse when I braked (even on light braking). I had Honda look at it, they said they didn't see any issues......various franchise shops and private owned shops looked at it and said the same thing......no issues. Was new to cars and a friend recommended I replaced the rotors, did so, and it went away! But then again, can't guarantee this is the exact solution for your car. But worth looking into!

From my experience, you really need to get the service adviser or tech to sit in the car with you and you personally show them the issue.

Best of luck!

Ok, so just because you have you tires Road Force balanced, that doesn't mean your tire/wheel assemblies exhibit zero road force. What are the values for each assembly? These results should be available and the units are pounds.

We had a 2013 535 that had the same issue, and the dealer tried almost everything imaginable to solve it. It was somewhat mitigated by a new set of tires, but it never went away completely. It seems I recall at the time there were some threads on here about that issue but don't recall if anyone figured out exactly what was going on.

What tires? Had this with my Continentals RFTs 18" in that speed range. Eventually sorted itself out... or I stopped noticing I have a colleague with an F10 who has gone through the same experience like yours - 10 visits, alignment, balancing - eventually he was told he was imagining it. He says he feels the same with my car though I don't.

I had the same issue with mine right at 72mph, and they tried everything, alignment, balance, new rotors/pads etc. Never went away until I got new tires.

Now it vibrates a bit when I brake after 10k miles on the new tires. I just live with it. Maybe the next set of pads/rotors in front will fix it. I dont know...

Have you solved this issue ? I'm having exactly the same issue. Had the wheels balance countless times. The feel changes but the vibes are still there.
Next check is to test the rotors with a DTI.
I'm also going put vibration sensors at strategic points and compare readings a the bad speed (70mph)

85mph + all is good.

I replaced a suspect wheel. - no change
all wheels checked with DTI - Near perfect.
All front lower suspension, track control , tension struts and sway bar links. All replaced.

Mine shaked when I applied the brakes between 70-80. Had the front rotors turned and all is good now.

Still not resolved...
Have been on to BMW UK, they've advised trying a different dealer, booked in on 28th April.
Absolutely horrible to drive, vibration in accelerator pedal is getting worse, numbness up my leg

I've had the splash guard the sits behind the rotor fall off due to fatigue. It doe feel as if that is the same wheel where the vibes are coming from .
I had to take the rotor off to replace the guard and noticed that the rotor to hub flange was by no means clean.
I will re check all rotors tomorrow using a dti.

I did check last week on the RHF rotor . There seemed to be 0.08mm run out, that was on the middle of the disc rather than the outer edge.

I suspect the next job may be to get the rotors skimmed as BlueTangClan mentioned.
How much did this cost you ? ( I assume it was done on the car ?)

well...
went to rybrook this morning, went on a drive with the tech and he seems to think i'm imagining it and the only vibration he could feel is the road imperfections? despite not being able to get up to speed...

car is getting on to 75k miles now, wondering if its worth changing any of the suspension bits as a pre-emptive measure?

brake rotors were replaced not long ago with the two part brembo discs, no difference between before and after, all mating surfaces were thoroughly cleaned.

any ideas anyone at all? i'm at my wits end now

Do you know the values of your last Road Force Balance? Remember that the Hunter can't eliminate the road forces, it can only minimize them. There is a difference. Eliminating road force would mean each tire would measure 0 pounds, minimizing could be 3 lbs, 12 lbs, 20 lbs, etc. You get my point. If your values are over 10 lbs, you will have vibrations, most pronounced around 70 mph, with this F10 chassis. With other vehicles, you can get away with higher road forces. Not with the F10.

Have you ever had the driveshaft checked, especially the worn of flex disc?

Hi
The propshaft was replaced recently along with the flex disc/guibo bush

I don't know what the road force values were but I need to find another place to do it who'll do it properly. I have a feeling it wasnt done correctly

I've had the four alloys refurbished, two had slight buckles which they removed so I'm happy it isn't the wheels.

Need to get balancing done again I guess

Have you checked pneumatic engine support?

Mine is back with a vengeance when braking. Front end vibration when braking at speed. Its not fun but something I've lived with for a while. When I need front brakes and pads, I'll see is that solves any problems

Front end could be control arms and bushes. I had both sides replaced at 60k

But rear vibration can still be felt even if it's slight

My car was riding super smooth until I needed a new clutch at about 80K. After the clutch got changed I also got what was more of a hum or slight vibration between 60-80mph. The clutch, flywheel and transmission suspension was replaced. The balance was checked on the tires (not road force) but I highly doubt it's the tires since the car was extremely smooth until that service. One mechanic that knows my car says he can tell the difference before and after but he has no idea what could be causing it.
