Which OBD2 reader should I get?

I am looking for an OBD2 so I can read the codes on a car I would like to purchase. I have read suggestions here for Foxwell NT510 to Apps that require a subscription but I would like something simple (not too costly) so I can see if there are any issues with the car.

I don't own a BMW but would like to buy one but it is already throwing a transmission malfunction so I am concerned it might be a serious issue. The car I am looking at is out of warranty.

Thank you

If you just use to read code, Foxwell NT510 is a good one. If you want DIY on BMW, get the ISTA-D program.
