Thoughts on X5 50i Loaner...
Brought the F'10 in for servicing. The trunk-lid is not opening consistently and a bit of a rattle from one of the windows.
Dealer gave me 2016 X5 50i loaner - pretty loaded too with B&O stereo, ceramic shifter, padded dash, multi-contour seats. I'm sure a lot of this is standard. The new iDrive is very nice, the B&O stereo too, and the V8 magnificent. On the downside I found the seats somewhat uncomfortable, ride flinty vs planted, appearance pedestrian and really bad steering too. Outside of those few pluses, disappointed was my reaction. I liked my E70 35d and my wifes E70 35i more. I sure would'nt give up my F'10 for it. Not sure if the F'15 has been a sales success or not? But I would not be a purchaser myself. I've always liked the X5, but not this generation.

Never been really impressed with the current X5. I've driven the 35i, 50i, and 40e and I always thought it drove woodenly, exhibiting dead steering and a hard ride. I much prefer the looks and driving feel of the previous X5. Hopefully the new X5 is much improved over the current model because there is very stiff competition in this class of vehicles and BMW can't afford to screw it up since it seems more and more people are switching to SUVs.

Cars gotta go back after servicing...Some loose cables in the passenger door getting tied-down didnt fix the rattle...
A deeper look into the B Pillar is what service is doing next. Anyone else have this rattling problem on bumps? Mines coming from the front passenger area. At first I thought it was a loose seat-belt, but I was wrong. At least the trunk is fixed now lol!

Also, I do have rattles coming from both front doors (tried Gummi Pflege on the door seals which helped a little). Mine sounds like it might be coming from around the wood trim and it only happens on certain types of bumps at certain temperatures.

We'll see over an extended period I guess...I could have swore my rattle was window related. I had the tech in the car with me when I brought it back and he heard it too. He thought it was B Pillar related. Hopefully they'll get it resolved this next go. The drivers side is vault solid.

The last loaner I got was an X3 35i ...I found it pretty refreshing actually. Very comfortable and is perfect in the DC environment. No complaints from me but then again I didn't really have high expectations.

Was interested in getting one for the wifey. What do you mean by appearance pedestrian?

They had a more muscular stance, styling cues. Where as the appearance of this generation is more commonplace imo. When I got my F'10 back I was struck by how much more planted and solid it felt vs X5 50i. And I expect a lot from a 50i. I had that drivetrain in e71 and in that generation and X6 guise it was not only a beast, but a solid and planted one too.

To each his own. I wasn't the biggest fan of the re-design when it initially debuted, but it has certainly grown on me. I talked my parents into buying a new X5 Xdrive35i M-Sport last summer and they've been very pleased with it (they were coming out of a '13 E70). I've driven it several times and have to admit I enjoy it more than I do my F10. Only thing that bothers me about it is the plastic steering wheel trim that not only feels like something that belongs in a Ford Tempest, but when the lane departure warning vibration activates, it makes an intrusively audible rattle that makes me crazy. If it was mine, I'd have the trim replaced with something else. Great SUV otherwise - love how flat it handles, makes our F10s really feel boat-like by comparison.
