Acidic Liquid Attack
The week before last weekend while driving car, I remember some water got sprinkled onto car. At first I thought it was only from air conditioning dripping above and didn't pay any attention. Last weekend took my car to Keepre Pro to wash car, after wash I found many spots all over car. The spots are burned into the paint and there is no way to buff it out.
Took it to BMWHK, and service adviser said it must be repainted. The spots are mainly on the hood, front bumper, top of car and trunk. Only couple of spots on the fenders and door. Checked with my insurance company, it would be covered under my policy.(will not affect NCB if repair is under 100K) My question is should I claim insurance and have the whole car painted (worried it will affect resale value)? The car has only been used 3 months since new. Or should I just pay myself and just paint the hood, front bumper and trunk?

Understand the pain man. First month of taking delivery of my black 528 got stone chipped over my hood. Had the car's hood repainted. IMO if you worry about aesthetics, you should probably do it out of piece of mind. If you're worried about resale, you probably bought the wrong item. Cars depreciate and real value depreciation is significantly higher on luxury cars such as BMWs. If you are likely to keep the car for 4-5 years the amount you're looking at for the depreciation hit would be minimal compared to a non-repainted one (at least one can assume, if any at all).
Anyways if you have a choice of paint clear coat, go for ceramic clear coat for new paint, much better than the soft stuff bmw has. If it makes you feel any better, 3 months after my car's hood was repainted (after cure period), had applied cquartz finest on the car, 2 days in found some poser leaning on the rear fender with jeans & studs scratched the crap out of it. Lucky didnt penetrate the paint as the ceramic coat did its job... but 2 days after! was incredibly bad luck for me... needed to have the section polished off thinning the coat sigh. Bear in mind that these things happen though. |

It really depends on whether you want to retain the original BMW base coat paint colour. Not sure what coloured paint you have but looks like you have some sort of metallic paint and bmw have some of the best metallic colours in the business. Not sure what mixing bmw base paint with another brand's ceramic clearcoat will do but likely wouldnt take the risk unless its a normal base colour such as black.
Audi and Mercs use ceramic clearcoat from my understanding, you can try a bodyshop stocking their paint, though may not have the same colour base as your original car. Make sure if you do repaint your car to find out how long the paint cure period is. During the first month or so after repainting the car, the car paint is very soft til it fully cures and hardens. Be careful during that time and do not wax, seal or apply protective coating during that time. Paint curing period can be anywhere from 30days to 90days. |
