I would just get an airbag and put it in. Might just work, as long as you’re already coded for paddles.

Yeah, that’s what I was going to try.

I do remember someone trying this before and definitely noted requiring some additional parts and the resistance was definitely an issue that he needed to address after the car started shifting by itself in manual mode.

https://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1274977

You can always just keep the paddle shifters for the looks and save yourself a lot of time and sanity. Can't say I've honestly ever used them on mine, ever. I suppose this is what happens when you drive 4 cars back to back all manual and then be forced into automatic tranny :-( The shifter is your friend.

Based on what I remember back when I bought my M sport steering wheel:

LCI and pre-LCI share resistance values, but do not fit on each other's wheels. So you should be fine.

If the paddles still shift by themselves, you might have a bad SZL. Back when I was chasing shifting issues, I found out that my SZL was going bad, so that's another place to look.

By my recollection LCI and pre-LCI are the same paddles. LCI M-Sport and M5 have longer more aggressive paddles but the regular paddle still works and fits. All F10 paddles have the same electronics.

I was putting together an LCI M-Sport wheel by parts at one time when a good deal arose, then stumbled on a pre-LCI M5 wheel WITH airbag for a price I couldn't turn away so abandoned the LCI build. (I came from a pre-LCI, non-sport wheel so could not reuse the airbag for any retrofit).

I extensively researched at the time, and had some PM exchanges with Stuck. I remember my conclusions, but not all the proof along the way any longer.

If you got the steering wheel with paddles already on em and all off a 550, its plug n play. No issues. Will need the circle airbag though.

I was told it was from a 550, but after inspecting the wheel it looks like it was from an F15. Will this fit?

SUBSCRIBED! Please post lots of pics once you get it installed. I think that wheel is going to look incredible and that spec is exactly what I would order - a nicer looking wheel that's a subtle upgrade.

I just cleaned the Msport wheel in my '16. I just got the car and it's probably never been done. It looks fantastic, like new even, but I know at some point it will start to deteriorate.

Will do. They just shipped it out and sent me pics of their great work. Here is a teaser until I get it and install it this weekend.

That looks great! I'll be interested in your thoughts once installed as well as your long-term experience. As soon as mine starts to show permanent wear I'll be exploring my options. A worn out steering wheel drags down the whole car.

Got it installed and it looks AWESOME!! Super happy with Coby's work and the grade of leather used. Was a PITA to move all the parts over but so worth it.

That is a PERFECT upgrade for the F10 interior. A subtle detail that looks great and surely feels good as well. Congrats!

The pics look awesome. question though....was your steering wheel heated? Now that you have your wheel back, is the heating diminished at all? My steering wheel has started to peel in two places and I decided to order a leather+ perforated leather wrap from eastdetailing.com. I didn't think about how that may effect the heating of the steering wheel though. How hard was it to swap out the components of the steering wheel? Depending on the heating functionality and your input on the above, I may just do the core exchange as well. TIA!

The steering wheel feels even better than it looks. It's so nice to have that scruffy sound of new leather again. It is also a tad thicker.

No, Coby sends you an identical used wheel with new leather as requested, and you have have to swap over your parts and return the old one to get your deposit back.

My original was heated and so is the new one. You simply let Mike over at Coby know what options your original wheel has (heated, paddles, etc) and he'll make sure to get you the right wheel. Swapping parts over isn't hard by any means, just a pain and requires lots of memorization and pics to make sure all the cables are tucked in the right space. On a difficulty scale of 1-10, it's only a 2. On the PITA scale, it's an 8.

THIS. I got lucky… my car was used when I bought it and the whole left side of the wheel was glossy and smooth. I figured that's just the way it was with used leather steering wheels until I read about cleaning them to get that new matte finish back.

After cleaning mine it looks so much better, and has that same textured sound you're describing. The interior actually feels clean now.

When my wheel inevitably ends up worn beyond what cleaning can fix I'll be doing exactly as you've done, which will not only restore that new feeling but be a nice upgrade as well.

Here's my 60k mile used wheel after two rounds of cleaning. It could probably use another round or two, and then a cleaning every fall/spring after that:

EDIT: I must say the standard M-Sport wheel looks positively BORING compared to yours with the tri-color stitching and perforated leather. Why didn't BMW make them like that to begin with?!?

Do you know if they sell the wheel with airbag and electronics included already? I’m going from pre-LCI to LCI. All the ones on eBay are from Lativa etc not sure I completely trust it.

Got mine off ebay and shipped from Latvia well.
I just specified the buttons and features I wanted and received the wheel in 4 days via DHL.
