Error 120308 - charging pressure control, plausibility pressure too low

Anyone have personal experience hunting this one down on our cars? I'm 535xi pwg

Got a boost leak test/fix based on some suspicious logs before the code ever showed up

The suspicious logs didn't change, so I put on a new boost solenoid and new solenoid-to-wastegate vacuum hose and that's when this code showed up. I put the old solenoid back on (in case the new one is faulty) but still got the code.

Next step in the wild goose chase is to test the wastegate itself. SMH

I had the boost leak test/pressure test done at an indy shop. Weird that the code only showed up after the leaks were fixed.

When you got the 120308 code, did it ever get accompanied by these kind of misfire/injector/combustion codes? The first time I only got the 120308 code (with Dmal/limp mode), but the next wot log I also got these codes (with Dmal/limp mode)...I'm really hoping that these codes are just from the Dmal/limp mode and the only real problem I have is the 120308 issue, any insight there? My plugs/coils are only 5k miles old, and I'd be surprised if my injectors coincidentally went at the same time I'm having these other issues....

140001 - misfire, several cylinders: fuel injection is switched off
140010 - combustion misfires, several cylinders: detected
140201 - misfire, cylinder 2: fuel injection is switched off
140210 - combustion misfire, cylinder 2: detected

Are you running stock plugs at the stock gap? When tuned you have higher cylinder pressures, which makes its much harder for the spark to jump the gap. Which fries the coil packs overtime. Common issue when tuning.

I’d recommend replacing your plugs and probably coil packs and running a tighter gap on the new plugs. Probably .022 ish.

Common problem if you haven’t tightened the gap is killing coil packs and misfires in a tuned engine.

Happed to me on the 11 gti I had with a k04 turbo upgrade.

Hadn't considered that. Very weird it hit at the same time as the low boost issue but now I'm just getting the combustion/misfire error about midway through 3rd, where before I had to get closer to 5k-6k to get the low boost code to hit. Might just be that I'm getting tag teamed by both issues at once.

The plugs and coils only have 5k miles on them, and I've only gone through 4 custom tune revisions so far so haven't been using the custom tune on a daily basis...but since I'm going through revisions I'm WOT doing logs all the time.

Does that seems stupid early to have plug/coil issues or totally possible?

Do you have the original plugs and coils? Maybe start swapping it out one by one... I had one of my spark plug went bad... I put my one of the original 40k plug back in and the misfire went away... right now I am just on a ots map

I'll check it out. Thanks for this, hadn't considered this in my troubleshooting...

Is there any chance that the low boost plausibility code could be some weird reaction to the misfire - like the dme cuts boost or something, and there's not a separate issue there? Doubt it but just wish these issues were related

As far as swapping plugs, another weird thing about this is that it says multiple cylinders. Made me originally think it's either fuel pump issue or just from limp mode bc of the low boost issue.

Don't know if this helps but I found a pic of when I had the misfiring issue...

Awesome, that's it.

And it was just your cylinder 1, even though it said multiple cylinders?

ey2001, it's def looking like plugs are part of the problem so thanks again

bmw5sport, I've got the diy leak test on my list for the future. Good heads up on the exhaust leak, that must've been infuriating

Still at the shop - so far replaced an Injector and put in NGK 97506 one step colder plugs gapped at .022" (per the tuner) and all those 140xxx misfire/combustion codes are gone.

He can't replicate the low boost code. It only started after I replaced the boost solenoid, so there's a chance it was a faulty (new) solenoid which I've swapped out since. I'm hopeful but kind of expecting it to show up again somehow.

The last issue we're trying to sort out is my wgdc gets to 100% with the custom tune even though I only get to ~10psi at the top. That's low even for Pwg, but I'm in Denver so maybe it's just the altitude. Still weird that it's at 100%. Still need to test the wastegate actuator to make sure it's fully closing at 5 in/hg vacuum, and if it is then I think I need to shrug it off and send it...

Here are logs showing 100% wgdc on the 4th revision of my custom tune:

https://datazap.me/u/ahetts/v4-3-log...0&data=3-14-24

And here's a log from before I started custom, using mhd stage 1, where I'm also at ~10psi at the top but only 60% wgdc. Weird stuff.

I have been chasing this low boost error for a while now. Replaced boost solenoid, vacuum lines, adjusted wastegate (was way out of adjustment) and pressure tested to 24 psi numerous times. So I finally broke down and changed the diverted valve and BOOM...the boost is back. It was a pain, but I’ve finally gotten past 12psi on MHD stage 2.

Switched to Stage 2 E30 map this morning and she's feeling fun. So nice to not get that error when I gun it.

That must've felt amazing when the DV change finally fixed it!

I still haven't fixed this bc the code doesn't come up during normal driving - only after multiple redlines doing logs etc - and I just got tired of the trouble shooting so have let it be for awhile.

New solenoid and vac lines didn't help. Got a good tip from bmw doubles that boost pressure is measured by throttle position so I should reset my throttle adaptation...gotta try that especially bc I have a BMS Pedal Tune. If that doesn't work, couple more things to try are:

- check for cracks in the valve cover vent to air intake and its sensor (also per bmw doubles)
- swapping my MAP sensor
- checking for leaks(again...)

Hope you find the error soon. I’m going in one more time and installing GFB DV+ upgrade next weekend. The boost is fantastic.

Your diverter might be bad too. We had pretty much the same symptoms. It’s awkward to get to but loosen the 3 water pump bolts and slide it over and it’s doable. Patience is required.

Good to know about the install.

The DV was obvi your issue, but have you figured out how it caused the low boost error even though the pressure test worked fine? I guess a pressure test must not include DV?

Stock turbo was failing, PS2 is on the way!

Wish I had a more conclusive ending for anyone that was curious about this. Maybe the turbo was the only problem, maybe it was the stock DV, who knows. If the PS2 and DV+ don't make the code go away I'll be back to complain and ask for more help haha

Not sure that anyone cares at this point, but once the turbo came out it was clear that the WG was sticking in the open position. Not locked, but sticking pretty good every few swings. That seems to fit with the symptoms...

Did you have any codes?
