Should be a total no-brainer to bring them to the US in light of expected gas prices,....that is for anyone at BMWNA that has half a brain.

Engine sound is quite similar to the one I have in my 535d xDrive 313 hp, 630 nm tourque. But mine has just rolled 700 km, so I have not run it at high rpm. M550d engine and 535d 313 hp engine is the same, but M550d have an extra turbo-powered electric.

Why would any one in NA want a 5 series that does 0-60 in 4.7 secs or less with all wheel drive and 35 mpg! LOL

Why not throw this engine in a 3 series, bump up the power to around 400 and call it the new M3 (and keep it AWD). I would pay $70k for that.

He should change gear about 4.400 1/min, not close to red area...

Holy crapsicles. That is the first time I've ever seen a diesel rev to 5500rpm (and still making usable power).

Even Audi's TDI LMP-1 cars don't go over 5k!

I thought there was a physical limitation in the burn rate of the fuel that presented an RPM limitation-- can that be compensated for with ludicrous amounts of boost or something?

I have a feeling this thing won't work nearly as well on 40-cetane diesel (which is the US minimum value) which may be one reason why they don't want to bring it here.

Thanks to Active Sound Design. It's electronic. They could make it sound like a V10 if they wanted to (in fact, the ASD in the new M5 does sound like a V10).

For the rest of us without ASD, there are 3rd party solutions available!
Here's an Impreza with a virtual V8 playing through the stereo and driven off the tachometer.

Would have gone even better if he'd upshifted earlier!

I'm very curious to see the powerband on this engine. I watched the video and the entire time I was thinking that the driver might benefit from upshifting sooner since diesels (even "high performance" ones) tend to die off above about 4,500 RPM.

I have to agree that the fake engine sounds is so bizarre and phony. I would never drive a car with this unless I could disable it.

i wish it was going to come to States. i've been wanting a 5 series with a diesel in it for a while. the combination of performance and efficiency is amazing.
bmw sells the hell out of the X5 35d here and the 335d sedan has been strong as well from what i've read.

0-155mph in ~35 seconds, about on par with a 335i.
