Are these F10 LCI Adaptive Headlights ?

The options list for this 2016 LCI F10 states:

0524 - Adaptive Headlights
05AC - High beam assistant

So, i've moved the steering wheeling while the car was still, but nothing, no movement.
So ? I didn't properly tested it ? Or ?

Adaptive headlights work under specific parameters. One of them is that the car has to be moving in order for the headlights to move in some directions (like in the direction of oncoming traffic) to prevent blinding them.

That is correct…and is verified in the excerpt from the owners manual above under the section titled “ACTIVATING”.

I have adaptive LED lights on my F10 LCI, the lights have "BMW Adaptive LED" embossed on the sides (see pic)

I Also have High Beam Assistance (I think its standard if you have adaptive lights) and as others have said the main light switch needs to be in the Auto position and High beam assist selected from the left stalk (Green High beam symbol with an A in the instrument cluster) it only works above a certain speed and light conditions (i.e dark!).

Also my lights move slightly left and right based on steering input plus the beam length changes with speed. At slow speed you can see this happening easily and when manoeuvring slowly, also it has corner lights when on full lock or near full lock they illuminate the side of that you are turning towards at slow speed, not sure again if this is a feature standard with Adaptive lights as well as the High beam assistance.

My car is a Euro car so not sure if the US F10's are any different in the way adaptive lights work or the features.

Hope this helps.

No…our adaptive headlights do not work like they do in Europe (unless you’ve had them coded).

There is a “decoded” option number on our build sheets that reveal that VLB. (Variable light distribution) is decoded. This is the LED headlight feature that moves the drivers side headlights to expand field of vision in city driving, then changes as you speed up.

But if you have adaptive headlights (HID or LED)…they will swivel when entering a curve…more so if its to the opposite side of the road…less toward the oncoming traffic side.

My lights have not been coded they are standard. VO has these options

552 Adaptive LED Headlights
5AC High Beam Assistance

Good to know the detailed differences with the markets!

In the US market…when we have the adaptive LED headlights and high beam assist…they still work but just don’t do as much movement as the Euro versions.

Our VO has those same options listed:
  • 552 Adaptive Led Headlight
  • 5AC Autom. High-beam Headlights Control

But then we also have some features of the adaptive headlights “decoded” (anti-dazzle & variable light distribution) where instead of the tunneling and movement to the left or right…the headlights will just switch back to normal…then when there’s no traffic…the high beams turn back on. For the VLD feature…we don’t get all of the different light distributions like the urban mode…but the cornering lamps do illuminate in turns and when you put the vehicle in reverse. We just don’t get all of the “fancy” light dancing that you all get in Europe. sigh:
  • 5AP Decoding For No-dazzle High-beam Assist
  • 8S4 Decoding Variable Light Distribution

If you are standing still…adaptive headlights will not move to the driver’s side. If you move the steering wheel to the passenger side while parked/idle/standing still…you may be able to see the headlights swivel to that side, though.

In the US market…you should see the headlights DIP upon start up…but this is only a system check…and if you have LED adaptive headlights…and you’ve coded VLD back on…then you will get the DIP and the driver’s headlight will move left/right upon start up. But after that…if standing still/idle/not moving…the adaptive lights will not move to the driver’s side.

LED adaptive headlight movement if VLD is coded back on:
