Hello,

I have a key fob that belonged to a 2016 535D.

I bought the car a couple of years ago and returned it within a week because it was all kinds of jacked up. I just found that I still have one of the keys.

I'd like $50 for it. Thanks.

Edit: I've updated the price to $25. I have no use for this thing and don't want to just throw it away. I'm pretty sure I have come across threads before with instances of reprogramming or coding these to work.

FYI. Key fobs can't be reused on another car. Beside the fact that the metal key is already cut, the transponder cannot be reprogramed once programmed for a car. Unless someone desperately wants it for the plastic shell, it's pretty much useless.

I thought it could be reprogrammed. Not by BMW (can, but won't), but by a coder.

You can do it with a Yanhua Mini ACDP.

Yep. What you will most likely have to buy is a new shell after opening the old one.

I believe the dealership can reprogram them for less than $200.

I'm surprised by the misinformation. spielnicht is the only one correct.

A random key cannot be programmed to a random car. When a car is produced, there are 10 transponder chips manufactured that match the FRM and other modules in the car. 2 end up in keys, the rest stays with BMW. If you order a replacement key from BMW, one will be made with the existing transponder chip and cut to your car, up to 8 times. After that you will need new FRM module and a new collection of chips. That's why the aftermarket solution linked above contains both the key chip and the replacement modules.
A key from a random car cannot be made to work to start the car (but it might be programmed to open doors/windows, which is separate from engine immobilizer). It's either a paperweight or can be used to source a shell.

I can vouch for this. BMW dealers CANNOT reprogram a key. Dealers can't program or make your keys for that matter. All keys (for the US market) are made by BMW of North America in a single facility on the east coast, then shipped out to the dealer that ordered them. The only thing the dealer then does is program the key to the car's CAS module (which you can typically do yourself most times), OR program the new key to work with comfort access (if so equipped).

Like it's been said, this is great for the shell if yours is beat up and just want to swap the guts!
