BMW F11 530d xDrive - Coasting Vibration Issue - Need Help!
Vehicle: BMW 530d xDrive F11 with Dynamic Drive Problem: Aggressive vibrations in steering wheel and front area when coasting above 80km/h Detailed Symptoms: Vibrations only occur when coasting (off throttle) above 80km/h Vibrations completely disappear when shifting to neutral during vibration Stop immediately when accelerating (back on throttle) Present during both uphill and downhill coasting Gentle braking during vibration has no effect - brake pedal doesn't kick back, brakes work normally Steering input in any direction doesn't help - vibrations persist Only solution: stepping on gas pedal to accelerate What I've Already Replaced: - Every single front axle component: all arms (Meile HD), bushings, housings - Rear differential bushings (all of them) - Oil replaced in: Transmission, transfer case, rear diff, engine, power steering (my dynamic drive has power steering with oil, not electrical) - Front and rear brake rotors and pads - All tyres (my discs are 19" and I am on runflats, pressured to spec) - Done the Dynamic drive system test via ISTA+, system works Test Results: Neutral test: At 130km/h while coasting with present aggressive vibrations, shifting to neutral makes ALL vibrations disappear instantly Acceleration test: Throttle input stops vibrations Braking test: Gentle braking to maintain speed while going downhill doesn't affect vibration intensity What I'm Thinking: Since the vibrations completely stop in neutral, this has to be drivetrain-related, not suspension/steering/braking. The fact that it only happens during coasting (engine braking) suggests something in the driveline that's affected by reverse torque loading. Questions for the Community: Propshaft center bearing? - Seems to fit the symptoms perfectly Transfer case issues? - Could clutch pack or chain wear cause this? CV joints? - Even though I replaced suspension components, could front CV joints cause this specific pattern? Diagnostic approach? - What's the best way to isolate which component is causing this? Additional Info: No error codes showing up in Ista+ (had one bad outside temperature sensor warning in the past only.) Car drives perfectly under acceleration until you drive for a very long time, like 5+ hours with the vibrations being present = vibrations later also under low acceleration, but not under heavy acceleration. Only happens at highway speeds (80km/h+) Has anyone experienced this exact symptom pattern? The "disappears in neutral" test seems pretty definitive that it's driveline-related. Any diagnostic tips or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated! TL;DR: F11 530d xDrive vibrates aggressively when coasting above 80km/h, instantly stops in neutral or under acceleration. Many suspension components replaced. Looking for driveline troubleshooting advice. |

Hi, I have a similar problem (BMW 520d XDrive).
When entering and exiting "efficient dynamic," a buzzing/vibration occurs. More is the speed, more hight is the noise/vibration. When I shift into neutral, the noise disappears. Light pressure on the accelerator pedal, disappears. So, it seems the noise occurs while the engine is in "efficient dynamic" mode, such as while charging the battery while coasting. I haven't allarm in the car. Everything seems to be working fine, except for the noise. Have you find solution on your vibration? Thanks |

It could be just central bearing on driveshaft or one of axles or hardy elbow on connection gearbox/driveshaft.. if everything else is exchanged.. have you checked your wheel bearings, maybe you have some wobble on wheel hubs?

I have located the issue. So i have changed all guibos / flex discs on the driveshaft + the driveshaft bearing and the issue was still there. after some careful inspection I have found out that my front tires have developed a so called "tire saw tooth wear" pattern which means the tires are smooth nicely in one direction (reverse) but very choppy in the other direction (you have to rub the tire profile which is touching the road in both directions and if you feel your hand getting stuck a lot while rubbing it in the front direction you have the same issue) It was very weird because the tires are new. So I have been in the workshop to get the car re-aligned + changing rear top arms and all eccentric bolts. Now I have completely new wheels on the way and then I will order new tires as well. My suspicion on the bad tire wear which lead to this tire saw tooth wear pattern is either wrong inflation or just bad alignment or I have been very unlucky and purchased not good tires (I run on pirelli's powergy 245/40 R19) I will try michelin or dunlop now.

The issue came back. I have new wheels and new tyres all brand new and while driving the first 100km on them i get the violent vibrations back after staying on 150km/h for half an hour and then letting off the gas pedal. Someone any idea pls? |

Have you checked the coil springs to see if they are broken? I have to replace a set in the rear and this is supposed to be the reason so we will see when I have this done.

Hi, everyone.
Update: I have replaced my front right wheel bearing (it made no weird sounds, but I was suspicious) and it was pretty cheap + I have changed the CV axle on the same wheel and the violent vibrations are gone. I am left with mild vibrations coming from the transfer case bushing, which I will replace as well, and hopefully I will finally have a vibration free car hehe.. |
