Terrible comfort access in f10
I have made some videos showing how badly comfort access works on the new bmw 2011 5 series f10. My opinion is that there are defects in the system. BMW says the system works fine, but I just have to be patient.
Whats your opinion defect or incorrect use? |

i can not speak from personal experiences but it looks like a defect. i have heard too many times on this forum of people having problems with their CA option. the video clearly shows that CA worked well sometimes and not so good other times.
i do hope bmw fixes this. if i am to go with the 5 series, hoping things go good, i will NOT go with comfort access. some people say it works fine for them, but i do not want a headache if i am one of those people who get a faulty CA system. it sucks because CA does seem like a great feature, still not sure if it is worth $1000 though. would rather put that money towards wheels |

I agree. I have a a F11 353d and although it's only day 2 I find the comfort access very frustrating. It's so easy to leave the car assuming it has locked and it isn't or stand by the car waiting...Renault cracked keyless entry years ago come on BMW fix this - I still don't know why it isn't possible as an option for the car to open immediately you get within a few feet and lock as soon as you move away.

I have had comfort access on my 2008 E60 and it worked flawlessly for 3 years. I have it on my F10 and the driver's door lock function does work properly and will be replaced next week. The open function on that door works flawlessly. The other 3 doors work flawlessly.
I can tell you that the system is absolutely not designed to function as you filmed it repeatedly opening and closing the same door within seconds of each operation.

I had the system (similar) on my 2005 Acura RL. It drove me nuts.
Some people had doors unlock/lock when they washed the car and water hit the handles. I saved $1000 and avoided it. |

I have the comfort access option, have had the car from Monday the 18th and the only difference I've noticed between the CA on my 2009 650i, 2008 X5 and the F10's CA is that the door lock function is a bit less sensitive than my previous previous cars. I agree with pharding the system was probably not designed for immediate locking and unlocking like your doing in the video. So far i only had a single incident with the doors not unlocking immediately but they did unlock eventually ( I touched the door handle one more time) without having to get the fob out. That also happened once or twice with the CA on my 650i. Unless the fob is faulty I don't think it's a big deal its still beats looking for the fob, getting it out, and unlocking the doors ( I guess having CA for the past 5 or 6 years has spoiled me )

The key is in my pocket. The system works 80% of the time in dayly use. I come from a Audi A4 that worked 100%, even when doing as on the video. Normally I can open the door every time. Its the closing that works 80%.

My cars have no problem with comfort access, my 4 year old son can use it easily.

I had the same problem as pharding described above. My driver's door locking function failed after about two months from car delivery. BMW replaced it and now all four doors work fine -- absolutely no issues since.

So someone will send the videos to them. Obviously, there's a bug! However, your video tell us. Make sure it is locked before you leave because BMW won't pay for the loss. Last edited by renaissance; 10-24-2010 at 07:10 PM.. |

if a bunch of posters report they have had similar problems then there is an issue with CA. |

I responded to this same thread on bimmerfest, but for convenience, here is a repost:
It works fine for me after I learned the technique. 1. According to the manual, you need to hold your finger on the ribbed area for 1 second. Simply touching it doesn't work reliably. 2. The next locking or unlocking cycle is not available for TWO seconds. This appears to be one reason why it wasn't working in your video. It is specifically designed NOT to work in rapid succession. 3. According to the manual, radio interference can cause the system not to work reliably. (I never experienced this). You might try moving your cell phone to a different pocket. Although it doesnt say this in the manual, it appears to be designed to use your right hand when when approaching the passenger doors, and your left hand when approaching the driver side door (assuming a left hand drive car, so it would be the opposite for UK) |

I guess I was lucky because my 2005 RL system worked flawlessly for the 6 years I owned the car. I know many people had problems with it but I was not one of them. I liked it a lot so I reluctantly ordered the CA for my 550 - $1,000 is just ridiculous for something that should be included in the price of an entry level luxury car like the 5 is. I sure hope it works as well as the one in my RL.

Thats why I left that box unchecked on the order sheet Plus with my F10 the main part of comfort access I wanted was leaving the key in my pocket to start the car |
