Hill Descent in my car
I am going to assume that my 535ix has hill descent because it has x-drive, but can anyone think of when they would use hill descent in this car! Maybe on an icy hill? I'm not complaining, just surprised to see the button beside the shifter. I was even happier though to see the toggle button to switch between NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ beside the shifter, because I thought that was part of the Dynamic Drive option which I didn't order!

I was looking at the hill descent also. It seems to let the car go downhill at a controlled speed. You can control that speed using the speed control rubber toggle in the steering wheel. Looked to me that the fastest speed obtainable using hill descent was 15 mph. I still have to investigate that further myself. (Couldn't find it in owners manual).

There are a couple of steep hills on the country road leading to my place that I have engaged the HDC on my '08 335xi when it was slippery (i.e freezing rain). It works very well in keeping you going straight. Without it I more than likely would have slid sideways. I'm hoping it behaves the same on my new 535xi when it arrives.

Use the Auto Hold for steep uphill holding.
