HUD Visibility when off

I am considering ordering the HUD. I was wondering whether when the unit is turned off during the day whether you can see the partially reflective part of the window where the projected display is displayed. Is is distracting to not be able to see completely through the window right above the dashboard and but have to look through what looks like a "film" right in front of you. Again, I don't mind, if the HUD is turned on but I am wondering whether the slight loss in transparency of the area that the HUD displays on the window is a distraction when it is turned off.

You won't notice any difference with the HUD off.

I don't notice any film or other part of the windshield that looks different than the rest. I wonder if there is any difference in the windshield at all. Just looks like a continuous piece of glass. HUD on or off.

There is nothing special about the area of windshield where HUD is reflected. It's like any other part of the windshield. So no, you won't see any difference.

Actually, the whole windshield (not a specific area) is specially designed and constructed for HUD. You cannot use non-HUD windshield if you need a replacement.

Good news that you cannot see any difference. I wonder how much more the HUD compatible windshield cost if you need to replace it. Also is there a "hump" in the dashboard for the optics that project the HUD display onto the windshield or does the dashboard look the same as one without the HUD.

From inside the cars look the same.

The additional cost for a HUD windshield is minimal if anything extra for a BMW windshield. On my 2008 550i I had a chip in the windshield and I had it replaced by an independent windshield company. It was cost effective.
