Round up of F10 5 series issues/problems or no problems, everyone vote!
I've rounded up a number of problems I've read about from this forum and other 5 series forums that seems to be affecting a large number of owners. I'd like to get a consenus on exactly how prevalent these problems are, or perhaps the majority have no problems:
Jerking/hesitation when at 0-10mph: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=417714 (SOLUTION HERE) Steering noise with grinding sensation when turning at slow speeds: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=449013 and http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=495019 Pulling to the right: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409049 Goodyear LS2 tires bubbling easily: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=452737 Last edited by tallshorty; 11-10-2010 at 01:05 PM.. |

I have 2 problems. The raw horsepower scares me when I floor the accelerator. Sometimes when I look at the speedometer, it says 90 mph when I thought that i was going 65 mph. Other than that my 550i is perfect.

besides the pulling to the right, the cup holder (located on the console) door sticks when I close it, very hard to get it to re-open, and please, no comments about just leaving it open then, LOL.

I had none of the problems listed with my F11 520d. Just the wipers needed adjusting to stop them banging on the windscreen frame at the top of the upstroke. Didn't think that really counted as a problem

Problems
Well after waiting a long 2 months to get my 2011 535i xdrive, I don't get to enjoy it. Been at the dealership longer than I have had it. There is a "knocking" sound coming from the engine area and they have no idea what it is. Drive me crazy because it is somewhat loud. Just a constant tap-tap-tap. Speeds up a little when I give it gas but constantly there. Factory rep from BMW at dealership but still cant figure it out after 4 days told me they would replace high pressure fuel pump. Also the auto headlights come on even when it's high noon. I know i read somewhere on a post that others are having same problem. UG! Drives me crazy!!!

Just picked up my 535ix today! Dark Graphite with black leather and ash wood trim + executive package + heated rear seats (canadian model). Really stoked about it! This is my first BMW and I'm loving every part of it so far.
I can confirm mine does not have the following problems: -Pulling to the right -Steering noise/grinding sensation when turning at low speeds I do notice slight jerkiness at 0-10 km/h when accelerating very slowly but it is not very noticeable. Acceleration from start also seems to be instantaneous if I press down slowly but if I press down hard, I do notice a very short lag. Is that the problem people have been experiencing? |

Like ibimmer346 my car also shakes at idle occasionally, but it doesn't have to be cold to do it. It's not consistent and doesn't seem to have a pattern.
My remote is sometimes not recognized by the car. Once I had to use the key to open the door. Not sure at this point if it's the remote or car that is malfunctioning. Although not a "problem" the auto lights don't seem to recognize the sun very well as others have mentioned. No steering issues or pulling issues. And with the far superior manual transmission, I don't have the jerking at 0-10 MPH issue either. Not as problem free as my 335 (well, as it was until the HPFP went TU) but for a new BMW, it's not bad. I'll keep it...

My iDrive system would crash and reboot after starting the car on the first trip on each day. Very annoying! Finally after the dealer had had it back for nearly two weeks, having had great difficulty in identifying the fault, they replaced the CIC unit.
So far so good but fingers crossed ................... |

This is my second 5 series, Had an E60 Touring between 2006-9 which was 99%. Made the mistake of getting an Audi A6 last May when I had to renew... oh dear. It was so bad Audi agreed to take it back off me (big lease Co involved) and let me order again. Now the F10 is out I ordered a 520d and am really pleased I had my little Audi upset or I'd have had to wait until May 2012.
Anyway, I've had the F10 (Met Black 520d auto) for about three weeks. Fantastic, apart from fault with the i Drive where the Sat Nav, phone & parking sensors have died. This happened after three days, they repaired it but it went again after 2 weeks. BMW have inspected it again, but couldn't fix it the second time, so it's going back for a couple of days for investigation/replacements of components. Three problems...
(1) The handling at speed on poor surfaces is very poor.
(2) Coins stuck in both the cupholder (auto) and ashtray compartments - had to fix this myself using brute force as not covered by warranty but it should not happen in my view, it is a design fault. (3) Yellow engine warning light has come on, car has got to go in on Monday. Perhaps worse is that the dealer has made mistakes and mucked me about. Last edited by DNA_42; 11-25-2010 at 03:59 AM.. |

I'm picking up a lot of issues around dealer service standards on here... I am using Sytner in Harold Wood (East London) and they are not very good. I had a few problems with them the last time I had a BMW... it seems to be down to competency of staff, poor attitude and lack of consistency between staff around ongoing issues... every time you go in or make a phone call, nothing is written down so you have to tell them all over again.
Despite my complaints about the Audi A6 their customer service by comparison was excelent. I had a bottle of champagne for my troubles as well as some fantastic courtesy cars (Q7, A6, A5).... Not like the 1 series or Mini's I've had from BMW. Anyway, that aside, brilliant car, so I'll live with the poor customer service. |

Sorry didn't explain... It was a lease car ordered as part of my job... it actually came from a BMW Corporate business place out nr Heathrow. Although I did have a couple of chats with the tall blonde saleswoman before I ordered. I use Sytner because I live in the area. I work in Central London so there isn't a lot fo choice between there and home.

Yeah, I think that was the girl I spoke to.
I may see you around then...if you see a 60 plate 5 series with blue lights/sirens etc around the area that will be me. I work for LFB as an Officer and use the car to respond to incidents. Only one of three new 5 series in LFB at the moment, don't think the Police have them yet, don't think any London Ambulance Officer have them yet either. The contractor who fitted the kit to my car also does LAS, he said the only one's he'd done so far were for the Fire Brigade. |
