I'm in process of speccing a car and would like to know your thoughts on Pro Media, in particular:
What are the routing algorithms like vs a Tom Tom? What is the 'Traffic' service like? I have a Tom Tom with HD traffic and traffic notification is superb, much better than the previous Tom Tom RDS service I used. What other features of Pro Media are useful, larger screen excepted? Thanks in advance. |

Pros and cons
I have a major issue with the BMW system in that the real time traffic info does not work for the first 20+ miles. There is no T-Mobile signal at my house but there is after 1mile but the car refuses to connect to it. If you park the car in signal coverage for 1hr or so it is fine but leave it out if coverage for an hour or so and it doesn't reconnect. TomTom works fine just not the first mile. Someone else has reported the same when leaving underground multi storey carpark. TomTom routing is certainly much better but doing a tidy installation of a TomTom is not easy. No real place to mount it. Have not been to impressed with the traffic when it's working. Twice it has told me roads are closed (motorway slip roads) and given me long diversions when in fact there was only a lane closed. Some of the BMW maps are nice but they are not as upto date as the TomTom ones. Plus less frequent updates and more expensive updates. |

Thanks Eskdale, exactly the feedback I was looking for.
Looks like it will be a F11 with no nav rather than an F10 with nav then. Thanks again. |

I haven't experienced any problems with the Pro Multimedia in my F10; you get full UK postcode search and it's never given me a wrong direction. On top of that there's Google search, BMW connected and, of course, the large screen, which something like a Tom Tom cannot compare to.

Hi Jon D, I do agree some of the maps are nice on the big screen. But even on my 2012 F11 the maps are way out of date compared to the TomTom. TomTom's timing for arriving at the destination is far more accurate than the BMW. May be partly because TomTom selects a better route as well.
If you are lucky enough to have reception in areas where you park then may be it works ok for you but it certainly fails for me. I really wish I could report that it works well. But it needs fixing. It probably is just a uk problem. The 7 digit postcodes have a lot missing. Many places I go it does not find them at all, but they work on the TomTom fine. Try Tr2 5JF for the Trethem caravan touring park in Cornwall. The BMW has no idea where it is.!!! Biggest problem is there is no place to nicely mount a TomTom Jon |

Thanks in advance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last week i took delivery of a new 535D with RTTI, whilst i have only used the sat nav a few times, it worked perfectly. Prior to this i had a F10 530D, again the sat nav proved capable of getting me to the destination on time. Don`t forget what else in included with pro media, not just sat nav. Hope this helps.... For me, the best sat nav is the one I have when I need it. With best endeavours, there is bound to be a time when the Tom Tom or equivalent is inadvertently left behind and I get stuck somewhere. So for me, it has to be the proper in-car system.
There's no doubt that even a fairly low spec Tom Tom or similar will generally out-perform the BMW system, but I find the in-car system good enough. Mine is up and running within 25 seconds or so of starting the car (or switching on ignition) and has RTTI available within around 3-4 minutes. The RTTI is not perfect, e.g. indicating queuing traffic that has long-cleared or not most up-to-date with roadworks, but usually does a decent job. The maps are a bit out of date, e.g. my car is a Feb 2012 build and does not have a major road that was opened in late 2010. Having decided on the in-car system, going for pro nav over business was a no brainer for me. Larger screen, ability to split screen, faster navigation, DVD drive, HDD. |

I have always spec'd pro media, as the features offered are very good and for me it completes the car. My only frustration is the ability to find certain postcodes which is very annoying, especially as i have to result to using my free app on my iphone. BMW if you are reading this please sort it out!

Thanks all. I've decided not to go with Nav and that means I can get an F11 instead of a F10.
Currently going through company car sign off. |

Unfortunately my company does not allow options other than nav. Would you believe that I even have to pay if I want metallic paint? So it will be a 'bare bones' 520d SE with regular auto. (and metallic paint...) Thanks for the offer though. A900ss |
