2001 740iL to a 2011 535
Hello everyone, I currently own a 2001 740iL with 119K on the clock. I think it's time to sell her before she becomes a headache with major repairs, and I also want something newer with the latest iPod/satellite connections. I'm looking really hard at a few 535i Xdrive's in the local area, most likely certified pre owned models from the dealerships. $40k to 50k for around $32K. When I bought my 01 E38 I came into the BMW world blind and I wound up paying for that mistake. Before I commit myself to this F10 any thing I should worry about? I read somewhere to avoid the 550 model, I live in NYC and I need awd. I think the 535 will do just fine, plus save me a lot of money on gas. Anyway if you can point me in the right direction, that would be great. Thanks.

The E38 740 was a nice car - I loved that body style. But you do need to realize that the higher up the "food chain" you go within a luxury car line-up, the more expensive they become... not just to buy but to maintain. When something breaks on a 7-series, expect it to cost twice as much as a 3-series... or more.
I've owned 3-series prior to my 2014 550xi, and so far so good. I've had very good experiences in the past 13 years, and the 550 has been great so far. I think the pre-LCI 550 had a bit of a reputation just due to some minor hiccups with the engine... but there are plenty of happy owners around here. But again, more expensive car in the line-up, it'll come with higher maintenance. The N55 engine in the 535 is also used in the 335, and it's a solid performer and fairly reliable. It's a revised version of the N54 that originally debuted in 2006/2007 in the E90/E92 335. The F10 is BMW's best selling 5-series, and that's also playing a role in BMW's decision to make "evolutionary not revolutionary" changes to it in both the LCI facelift and the next model. I think the F10 and your current car have a lot in common - they both have classic BMW "stately" good looks, and they're roughly the same size. The current 7-series is just pretty massive. I think you'd enjoy the move. Get something CPO, and I think you'll be fine. Good luck with it - and make sure you to post pics and info if you switch!

Appreciate the advice and comments ezmaass. I would love a 550 if the price is right, but I don't want the headaches that may come with that motor, plus the fuel consumption. The whole timing guide issue is in the back of my mind when I look at 550's.

I think you will be pleased with the 535xi, I enjoy mine, I push it hard.....I have done some modifications to make it tailored to my liking. I am still debating with the JB4 tune........which will give you a significant boost in power, not a 550i, but a good compromise between good power and fuel efficiency.
I would test drive a 535xi first. The stock the suspension leaves a lot to be desired. It handles no where near my E60 530i. Its almost boat like kinda of like a Toyota Camry (and the driving height is high initially). About $600 in parts can fix all of that. H&R Springs and front M5 sway bar, will make you fall in love again. But keep in mind its a big heavy car. |

I have a question about different models. I'm looking for Satellite radio, iPod integration and possibly a good sound system with factory sub? Am I supposed to be looking at a particular model? I haven't gone to any dealerships yet, until I sell my 740.
