I wonder if the dealer came back to you?
I picked up 520D in September 2010 and gave it back in November as the steering was so 'all over the place' and they could not fix it. BMW replaced the car, which I picked up mid January. Steering much better, quite precise but very light and you need to control, especially at speed and in winds, uncomfortable rather than scary. Monday the car, which was parked, died on me and would not respond to the key. Breakdown engineer called out (3rd such incident he has encountered albeit the other two had corrected themselves before he got to them). He had to 'reboot' the car by disengaging the battery. Fault sorted and no fault showing on the car database. BMW garage at a loss as to what happened, eventually BMW said a new controller is needed, currently in transit but I'm wondering if a software update may improve the handling, did you get any details from your dealer? |

I contacted the OP's dealer, Sytner in Harold Wood, and found them to be extremely helpful. They informed me that the car had a full update using the latest ISSS software version (2.40.3)
My dealer up here in Scotland is looking into this and I'm awaiting their reply - I'll keep all informed as and when I hear anything. |

Comm box
My dealer told me that the comm box could not be retrofitted retrospectively and had to be done at the factory. Could you please tell who your dealer is and might approach them for help with the problems my dealer left me when they accidentally left the comm box off the order.
Thanks Adam |

My 525d F11 is off to the dealer tomorrow for them to have a look at the vague steering issue that is bothering me so much it could mean the end of my relationship with car.
I've phoned through the software code to them in advance so it's referenced on the job sheet and will see what happens. |

I have the same problem with the steering on my car, lots of small corrections needed if travelling at say 60 mph. My dealer denies there is any software solution which is frustrating.. Any info on the solution mentioned above would be very helpful

motorway journey as I was meticulously running it in on A-roads. I didn't ever think there would be an issue as a long range hi-speed tourer...the main reason I bought it! |

Thanks.....need to check mine out on a motorway cruise soon after I get it I figure!......as you say no reason to think steering feel would be a an issue on the F10/11 on a motorway. I currently drive an Audi A6....steering is light/little feel so I am sure the BMW will be better???

Where did you find the software code? I checked in idrive and all I could find were software codes relating to the phone and multi-media. My dealer told me that the car needs to hooked up to the their diagnostics computer in order to fully ascertain the car's status.

My F11 525d has been at the dealer for a day and a half with regards to the vague steering issue and they've just called to say that the suspension geometry was out and the car is now transformed!
Hmmm...We'll see. |

Got back home and the car was waiting for me so I jumped in and headed for the M4.....
20 miles later and, well, it's better, a lot better. I have no idea what they've done but the steering feels tighter at speed (80-85mph) and the vagueness in the straight ahead pretty undetectable. All I need to do now is lose the nasty run-flats and all will be good. |
