Haha who cares about the M designation? It's just a letter. I care more if these cars made it to north america than whether or not it has a letter M on the back.
They are probably doing a brand awareness campaign for ///M. A lot of people can't tell the difference between an M model and the non-M cars. These are strategies you think about when you are at the top of the charts amongst auto brands. |

I have a question. I know that Porsche will follow BMW in supplying one of its cars with a three-turbo but has anyone previously come up with the idea before BMW?

Look at the shape of the torque curve: I predict it will NOT be that nice to drive. The torque at 1000rpm is tiny vs huge at 2000rpm. In city driving in a diesel, you do almost all your driving in the 1000-2000rpm range.
This means you are going to be constantly on/off boost. Not nice. |

I don't know what all the complaining is about. I see a lot of people with coupes bitching. This car, the M550dxT is the ultimate car for us grown-ups who do not have the room for storage or want to waste the money on multiple cars.
This thing would be great for my lifestyle. Transport my bikes and skis to the mountains of the Northwest. Great mi/gal for nice long road trips to the Southwest. The ability to carry children and pets and their stuff in the future, if needed. All-weather capability. Stealth, stylish, comfortable, and outperforms 97% of the junk on the road. I am guessing 0-60 mi/h in mid-4 s range. The video of this thing ripping through the first 7 gears is impressive- makes me a believer in the new ///M ZF 8 speed slushbox. By the way, I own an E60 M5 and nothing sounds quite like it on the road. There comes a point though where sound of the engine really is not much of a selling point anymore when the car does everything else so well. Too bad BMW is sticking with us with more lousy SUV and crossover options here in he US instead of a nice overpowered wagon. The names are long but make sense considering BMW's newest nomenclature. Makes a lot more sense and easier to say than "1 Series M Coupe" at least.

The curve is absolutely normal considering it's a diesel engine. A freaking epic diesel engine! |

Yes look at the shape of this 550d curve compared to a 335d torque curve. The 335d is flat as Kansas in comparison. The 335d is *very* easy to drive in traffic.

I believe the motor is made in Germany, then shipped over to be assembled in Spartanburg. If you visit the factory at PCD, you can see some wicked X5/6 models designated for overseas. The have some cool wheel/color options that NA does not get.

I don't know why my countrymen complain so much...too much open land, cheap fuel, and cheap cars make the prospect of owning a high performance coupe, a huge pick up truck, and a family sedan, all at the same time, too common. The thought of one car doing everything scares some people.

It's not the 460Nm which is small; it's the ratio of this value to the torque at 2000rpm which is small. When you are driving in city traffic you are going to have an extra 70% of torque arriving as you accelerate to 2000rpm. That's going to make some hairy driving at roundabouts. With 3 x turbochargers, BMW should have been able to get something flatter. |

I really wish they would bring these models to the US. I'd place an order on the M550d xDrive to replace my current f10 535 just for the performance and gas mileage.
The main reasons I even picked up a 535 was the substantial difference in MPG versus the 550. I drive an average of 25,000 miles a year and to have the performance of a 550 with better MPG than a 535 is perfect in my book.
