2012 Detroit NAIAS: BMW F10 M5 - US Production in July. Manual Transmission Official

COMMENTS

Here's our coverage on the 2013 F10 M5 on display at the 2012 Detroit NAIAS.

BMW confirmed to us today that the 2013 F10 M5 (no 2012 model will be available in the US) will begin production for the US market in July 2012, with deliveries taking place a couple of months after that. No word on pricing yet which will be announced closer to the US market launch.

It will be available with either a seven-speed DCT or a six-speed manual transmission (now officially official, per the release below), which is welcome news for manual transmission fans. Both transmission will be available immediately upon US launch.

The model shown at NAIAS is equipped with DCT, but BMW promised a "short throw shift linkage topped with a black leather backlit shift knob" for the MT.

As for an F11 M5 touring model, BMW has confirmed that there are currently no plans to build one.

Stay tuned for more live coverage from NAIAS.

PRESS RELEASE + Expand

BMW Confirms 6-Speed Manual Transmission for the 2013 M5.

Detroit, MI –9:00am EST January 9, 2012
…On the occasion of the North American International Auto Show, BMW confirmed today that it will offer a 6-speed manual transmission on the North American version of the upcoming 2013 BMW M5. The 6-speed manual will be available from the start of production this summer and will be offered as a no-cost alternative to the standard 7-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT). The manual gearbox was a popular choice for U.S. customers of the previous generation M5 and continues to be a unique offer in the segment.

Though the 6-speed gearbox has one less gear than the M-DCT transmission, the ratios have been optimized for acceleration, flexibility and fuel economy. Final drive ratio and special M differential are maintained. The new transmission is mated to a short throw shift linkage topped with a black leather backlit shift knob.

The 2013 M5 will arrive at US BMW Centers in late summer 2012. Pricing, options and specifications will be released closer to the on-sale date.

Given the relatively new introduction of the M5. BMW did not want the M6 to overshadow the car on its US introduction.
There was to be no distraction from the overall Premiere of the BMW 3er Sedan.

The M6 Cabrio will now Premiere at the Geneva Autoshow in March.
The M6 Cabrio will make its US Premiere at the NYIAS in Early April.

The BMW M6 Coupe will make its World Premiere at the Beijing Auto show in Late April.

Stay posted for exciting BMW news beginning the 19th of January.

It was a popular option since the old SMG felt like it would wack your head off your neck.

Predict lower take rate on this due to the inherent goodness of the DCT.

now lets just hope that BMWNA doesnt try to pull that crap that they originally did, with the e60 M5.

When they first released the 6speed in the US, they originally made it so you couldnt fully disengage the DSC.

I hope not. Good thing there are plenty of reputable tuners who will have tuning software that should disable that.

That was due to severe wheel hop in the rear suspension on hard launches, the six speed car was quite slower in 0-60 and QM, check out the old Car And Driver tests, a 6 speed M5 was in the low 13's.

What's up? If it's less than a BMW M1 Hommage production model with more than 1000 HP, then i'm not interested.
