DCT or M-DCT option for the F10 550i?
Can anyone confirm or deny that a dual clutch transmission will be available on any F10 that is NOT the M5 ?????
After reading the details released today, it would appear that the 8spd automatic with a torque converter and the manual are the only 2 transmission options. I was hoping for the CDT or M-DCT to be available for the new AWD 550i 4.4L turbo. If not, I'll be buying the new S4/RS4 instead. |

I'm logging on here to get the facts. I was hoping for both AWD and DCT to be optional on the F10 550i. I NEED AWD and a DCT for my next car. A V8 with forced induction would make me VERY happy as well. |

Do you want the DCT for speed? I read in a few reports of the 5GT that the new 8-Speed is pretty fast as well. I know it won't be a DCT, but I'd say drive it before you make up your mind for the RS4.

Dual clutch transmissions (DSG, DCT) offer better performance, better control, and better fuel mileage.
They are the ONLY option if you want the best...period. I don't understand how someone can pay $50,000 or more for a car in 2009 and not DEMAND a dual clutch transmission. The Panamera Turbo is the best AWD performance sedan on the planet. But, I don't want to spend $140,000 to be the guinea pig for a new model that may have a short life span now that VW has absorbed Porsche. |

The Panamera 4S is AWD and DCT. It is also a lot cheaper than the Turbo.

But, the NON-turbo Panamera 4s is not much faster than the $50,000 2010 Audi S4, and the S4 is a known quantity. I would still prefer a F10 550xi with M-DCT and Xdrive to both because I know the 550xi will be MUCH cheaper than the Panamera turbo and I assume the BMW will be more reliable than an Audi. All Audi owners have told me they have had poor reliability with their Audis. |

Why is that?
I want 4 doors, AWD, DSG, and M3 or M5 performance. So, on paper, Audi comes close. But, EVERY Audi owner I have ever met said the cars are UNRELIABLE. A new 5 series with DCT and AWD is what I want because I ASSUME BMW has better reliability then Audi. |

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Affirmative on the AWD for the 550i.
The following is from BMW release Quote: Powertrain: The essence of BMW EfficientDynamics. The new 5 Series will be offered in the United States with a choice of three gasoline engines. At its introduction, the new 5 Series will be available as a 535i and 550i. The 528i and xDrive all-wheel drive variants of all three models will arrive later in the year. Audi will just not cut it guys...................RS5 is a nice looking car but.........?? I think Frankie D is going 550i x drive. Stay out of my way.................. |

It won't ever get the DCT gearbox but after driving the new 8sp auto in the 5GT I can say that you don't feel short changed by not having a DCT. Another thing, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the M5 got this 8sp auto instead of a DCT, it can cope easily with the torque and it's surprisingly quick at shifting gears.

With all due respect, please don't tell us that an automatic can compete with dual clutch transmission. That's ridiculous. Anyone who has driven a DCT will tell you that it is the ONLY choice . Furthermore, please don't say what BMW will or won't due unless you have a reliable source. Quote:
But after driving a DCT transmission, you'll find no auto can compete with it. There is a reason there is no automatics in F1 and most new supercars are coming with dual clutch transmissions. Everyone knows that. But, a new RS4/RS5 is supposed to be on the way. We'll see. |

Hate to tell everyone that the 550i will not be getting the DCT. Especially in AWD form. Building a DCT capable of handling the torque transfer is not cheap and something BMW will not be doing. The new sport autos shift as fast and can handle torque better. There will be some more tricks in the sport autos that do everything the DCT can do. Until you get to drive the new 8 speeds w/ sport auto I think a lot of you DCT fan boys should relax. There is a change coming and it is for the better. Do not be surprised to see Porsche/VW lose the PDK in the future along with BMW....
